{"id":19583,"date":"2022-08-16T14:19:32","date_gmt":"2022-08-16T12:19:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/?p=65749"},"modified":"2022-08-16T14:50:11","modified_gmt":"2022-08-16T12:50:11","slug":"project-plans-to-bring-back-the-extinct-thylacine","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/project-plans-to-bring-back-the-extinct-thylacine\/","title":{"rendered":"Project plans to bring back the extinct thylacine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\"><\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By James Fair\n                \t\t<\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 16 August 2022 at 12:00 am<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Plans to bring back the thylacine or Tasmanian tiger, also known as <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/extinct-thylacine-sightings\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">thylacine<\/a> \u2013 the dog-like marsupial predator that went extinct some time during the 20th century \u2013 through a technique called gene editing has been met with caution and some outright scepticism by conservationists.<\/p>\n<p>A biotech company called <a href=\"\/\/colossal.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Colossal Biosciences<\/a>, which is already working on a project to recreate the woolly <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/expert-guide-to-mammoths-all-your-questions-answered\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">mammoth<\/a>, has announced it is in the early stages of engineering the thylacine using genetic material from dead animals and living relatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we have the engineered cells, we use stem cell technologies and cloning techniques to turn those cells back into a living animal,\u201d says Dr Andrew Pask, head of the <a href=\"\/\/tigrrlab.science.unimelb.edu.au&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Thylacine Integrated Genomic Restoration Research Lab (TIGRR)<\/a>, Colossal\u2019s main project partner.<\/p>\n<p>TIGRR\u2019s website shows how scientists hope to use genetic material from the thylacine\u2019s closest-living relatives \u2013 the dunnart and the numbat \u2013 to engineer a thylacine-like embryo that gestates inside the womb of a Tasmanian devil. Offspring would be isolated at birth and hand-reared.<\/p>\n<p>Assuming the \u2018de-extinction\u2019 can be achieved, Colossal says returning thylacines to the wild could have huge benefits for Australian wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout an apex predator, ecosystems plunge into a series of cascading trophic downgrading effects,\u201d it says. noopener noreferrer\">dingo<\/a> has been found across mainland Australia for thousands of years and because it can operate in a pack, it is actually a higher-order predator than the thylacine,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Jack Ashby, Australian mammal expert at the <a href=\"\/\/www.cam.ac.uk&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot;
