It measured 2.7m from head to tail, and weighed 293kg.<\/p>\n<p>However, in June 2022 a Cambodian fisherman fishing on the Mekong River caught a female giant freshwater stingray (<em>Urogymnus polylepis<\/em>) which claimed the title of the largest freshwater fish in the world. She measured a remarkable 3.98m in length (tail included) and 2.2m in width. And she weighed an astonishing 300kg \u2013 roughly equivalent to a <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/grizzly-bear-guide-where-they-live-how-they-hunt-and-conservation\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">grizzly bear<\/a>.<\/p>\n<iframe title=\"&quot;300kg\" giant=\"\" freshwater=\"\" stingray=\"\" release=\"\" width=\"&quot;200&quot;\" height=\"&quot;113&quot;\" src=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6L3fGBZygds?feature=oembed&quot;\" frameborder=\"&quot;0&quot;\" allow=\"&quot;accelerometer;\" autoplay=\"\" clipboard-write=\"\" encrypted-media=\"\" gyroscope=\"\" picture-in-picture=\"\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/>\n<p>She was named \u2018Boramy\u2019, which means \u2018full moon\u2019 in the local Khmer language, due to her shape and the evening time of her release. She was measured and tagged by scientists working in the US-Cambodian Wonders of the Mekong Project in collaboration with the Cambodian Fisheries Administration, and released back into the river.<\/p>\n<ul><li><strong><a class=\"&quot;standard-card-new__article-title&quot;\" href=\"&quot;https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/skate-vs-ray-whats-the-difference\/&quot;\">Skate vs ray: what\u2019s the difference?<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201cThis is an absolutely astonishing discovery and justifies efforts to better understand the mysteries surrounding this species and the incredible stretch of river where it lives,\u201d said Dr Zeb Hogan, a giant fish expert, presenter of the <em>Monster Fish<\/em> TV series and director of the project, to the <a href=\"\/\/www.guinnessworldrecords.com\/news\/2022\/6\/record-breaking-ray-confirmed-as-worlds-largest-freshwater-fish-708416&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Guinness World Records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile fishermen in Cambodia tell stories of stingrays up to 500 kg [1,100 lb], we\u2019ve never been able to verify these reports. Its current distribution includes Southeast Asia and Borneo, though it\u2019s thought that historically it was more widely distributed across South and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>The species is listed as Endangered on the <a href=\"\/\/www.iucnredlist.org&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">IUCN Red List<\/a>, facing a variety of threats including hunting for meat and recreation, capture for aquariums, and habitat degradation and fragmentation.<\/p>\n<h2>What is Europe\u2019s largest freshwater fish?<\/h2>\n<p>There appears to be no definitive answer. Some scientists bestow the honour on the wels catfish (a 127kg individual was caught in Italy in 2015); others claim the title belongs to the Beluga sturgeon.<\/p>\n<p>Still others nominate the mangar, a little-known relative of the common barbel and a voracious predator whose name translates as \u2018pike-like wolf- barb\u2019.
