Madsen suspects that the first settlers followed Taiga bean geese heading there when their migratory paths crossed. “Perhaps they just jumped on the train to see where it takes them,” he says. “They now take exactly the same route, with the same timing, as the bean geese.”

Where and when to see overwintering geese

The UK’s most spectacular winter bird flocks

How do birds know when and where to migrate?

How do birds fly?

Main image: Pink-footed geese © Education Images/Universal Images Group/Getty Images

Pink-footed geese have adapted quickly to a changing Arctic by radically shifting their breeding grounds and migration routes

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-scaled.jpg",2560,1679,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-300x197.jpg",300,197,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-768x504.jpg",768,504,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-1024x671.jpg",800,524,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-1536x1007.jpg",1536,1007,true],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/arctic-geese-rapidly-find-new-migratory-route-to-cope-with-climate-change-2048x1343.jpg",2048,1343,true
Pink-footed geese have adapted quickly to a changing Arctic by radically shifting their breeding grounds and migration routes
