Namely, to ward off predators and attract mates. But iridescence may have a third purpose.

Research by the University of Bristol’s Camo Lab has discovered that it can also act as camouflage. Counter- intuitively, iridescence may help hide an insect among vegetation, especially in dappled lighting conditions, making it harder for a hungry bird to spot.

What is bioluminescence and why and how do some animals, including glow worms, glow?

Sea insects: why are there so few insects in the ocean?

Does Antarctica have any insects?

Why were prehistoric insects so large?

Do any insects give birth to live young?

Main image © Getty Images

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent.jpg",2116,1416,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-300x201.jpg",300,201,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-768x514.jpg",768,514,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-1024x685.jpg",800,535,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-1536x1028.jpg",1536,1028,true],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2023/04/why-are-so-many-insects-iridescent-2048x1370.jpg",2048,1370,true
