This problem cannot be fixed overnight, but we are determined to do everything we can to transform our rivers and seas in the way we all want to see.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, environmental campaigner Feargal Sharkey called it a \u201chalf apology\u201d, telling the BBC Radio Four <a href=\"\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m001lzlk&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><em>Today<\/em> <\/a>programme: \u201cWhat I am actually hearing is no apology for the fact we have paid them for a service we haven\u2019t got, they are now suggesting we pay them a second time for a service we haven\u2019t had. We should have an apology for the suggestion they are going to put bills up by \u00a310 billion for their incompetence and their greed, this is nothing to celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"text=While%20the%20data%20shows%20a,last%20year%27s%20below%20average%20rainfall.&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Environment Agency figures<\/a>, there were a total of 301,091 sewage spills in 2022, an average of 824 a day. Water UK says their plans will cut the number of overflow incidents by up to 140,000 each year by 2030.<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"> <div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <p><strong>More related content:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/people\/what-has-gone-wrong-with-our-rivers\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">What has gone wrong with our rivers?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/environment\/nature-based-solutions-how-nature-can-help-prevent-flooding\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">How nature could help fix our flooding and sewerage problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p> <\/p><\/div> <\/section> <p>The investment aims to build new facilities to hold surges in rainwater; increase capacity for sewage treatment works; introduce measures to reduce rainfall entering sewers by replacing concrete with <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/environment\/nature-based-solutions-how-nature-can-help-prevent-flooding\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">grass and ponds<\/a>; fix misconnected pipes from properties and treat overflow spills so they have much less impact on the <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/people\/what-has-gone-wrong-with-our-rivers\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">river<\/a>, including <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/environment\/nature-based-solutions-how-nature-can-help-prevent-flooding\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">through reed beds, wetlands<\/a> and other <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/environment\/nature-based-solutions-how-nature-can-help-prevent-flooding\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">nature-friendly projects<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But this investment could mean higher bills for customers. Reportedly shareholders in water companies will initially fund the investments but the costs will be recouped from customers through unspecified increases in their bills determined by regulators.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Alex Ford from the <a href=\"\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">University of Portsmouth<\/a> has studied the effects of pollutants on wildlife and humans: \u201cIt\u2019s good to see an acknowledgment from body representing the water industry that things need to improve. Trust has been eroded in their ability to deal with this issue. Chemical pollutants present in sewage discharges will be evident in our <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">marine wildlife<\/a> for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Following heavy rainfall, companies are sometimes allowed to spill sewage to prevent the system from becoming overloaded and backing up into people\u2019s homes. The criticism is that these spills are happening too often.<\/p>\n<p>In April 2023 the <a href=\"\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/storm-overflow-target-to-be-enshrined-in-law&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">government announced<\/a> that its target to reduce storm overflows will be enshrined in law through the <a href=\"\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/ukpga\/2021\/30\/contents\/enacted&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">Environment Act 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have been unequivocal on this issue.
