So perhaps it\u2019s unsurprising that the Great Pacific Garbage Patch \u2013 a vast mass of floating plastic debris concentrated by ocean currents \u2013 is being colonised by animals and plants. But new research reveals they have surprising origins.<\/p>\n<p>Published in the journal <a href=\"\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41559-023-01997-y&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\"><em>Nature Ecology &amp; Evolution<\/em><\/a>, the study found that 80 per cent of the organisms attached to the plastics \u2013 including <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/why-do-some-molluscs-have-beautiful-shells\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">molluscs<\/a>, crustaceans and <a href=\"\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/why-do-anemones-grow-in-patches-of-colour\/&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener&quot; noopener noreferrer\">anemones<\/a> \u2013 were species normally associated with coastal habitats rather than open-water ones, despite being thousands of miles from land.
