It is perhaps understandable that the interests of wildlife come a poor third to considerations of road safety and budget.<\/p>\n<p>Driver sightlines are of paramount importance, and for cash- strapped local authorities lacking in time and expertise, it\u2019s not surprising that maintenance regimes are often far from sensitive, involving regular mowing and dousing with herbicides, in most cases.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>But now ecologists have a new concern over verge management \u2013 and, at first glance, it seems a surprising one. An explosion of colour along roadsides\u00a0in several UK cities last summer\u00a0was replicated in the media, with the riotous displays \u2013 often in otherwise unprepossessing locations \u2013 described as \u2018wildflower meadows\u2019. They were widely celebrated for their powerful visual impact and the resource they\u00a0provide to pollinating insects.<\/p>\n<p>A 13km-long stretch through\u00a0Rotherham in Yorkshire has attracted particular attention, despite having been in place\u00a0for more than six years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople call it the river of flowers,\u201d says councillor Sarah Green, who holds the city\u2019s portfolio for Cleaner, Greener Communities. \u201cThe road is\u00a0a gateway to the city, and the change has been a fabulous thing, which people have really got behind. It\u2019s provided a much-needed source of nectar for pollinators and has created an uplifting spectacle.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;image-handler__container\" like the ultimate win-win, but not everyone is thrilled. \u201cSome people think we\u2019ve only done it so we don\u2019t have to cut the grass,\u201d says councillor Green, \u201cand that\u2019s partly true. The idea came from the Highways Department. The mowing they used to do meant regular weekend road closures and cost around \u00a380,000 a year. The river of flowers is saving about \u00a325,000 of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Unnatural selection<\/h3>\n<div class=\"&quot;page&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Page\">\n<div class=\"&quot;section&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;layoutArea&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>That the scheme started as a cost-saving measure might be telling, given that more specific criticism comes from ecologists. Joshua Styles, project co-ordinator of the <a href=\"\/\/nwrpi.weebly.com&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">North-West Rare Plant Initiative<\/a>, is one such critic,\u00a0and his concerns are threefold. Firstly, the mix of species\u00a0shows these displays are anything but natural and contain lots of non-native species.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;page&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Page\">\n<div class=\"&quot;section&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;layoutArea&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>\u201cWhile these may be good for a few general pollinators, they support far fewer invertebrates than natural, native verges,\u201d says Styles. \u201cHistory has taught us that introducing non-natives is not a good idea,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;page&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Page\">\n<div class=\"&quot;section&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;layoutArea&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>Secondly, most of the sown plants are arable weeds, which need to fall on bare\u00a0soil in order to establish. So, the process of creating the display involves the wholesale destruction of existing vegetation, usually by spraying with a broad-spectrum herbicide, such as glyphosate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFinally, the message these mixes portray is that this is what a wildflower\u00a0meadow should look like, and what that does is encourage people\u00a0to sow the same sort of mix elsewhere,\u201d Styles\u00a0says. \u201cIt\u2019s worrying that anyone can buy\u00a0something sold as a \u2018wildflower mix\u2019\u00a0and spread it where they like.\u00a0Councils are\u00a0often doing this at scale without any kind of ecological survey first to see what natives might be disadvantaged or even crowded out.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"&quot;highlight\"><div class=\"&quot;highlight__content\" editor-content=\"\"> <h4>Pros and cons<\/h4>\n<p>Native verges may be less showy than sown meadows, but natural seed banks can produce astounding diversity and botanical gems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sown verges<\/strong>, if carefully planned, have the advantage of long, continuous flowering and bespoke, impactful colour schemes. On the downside, non-native plants may not be as attractive to pollinators or provide food for larvae, there is a small risk that some may become invasive, and mixes based on arable weeds require the destruction of existing vegetation every year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Natural verges<\/strong>, managed sensitively, can be extraordinarily diverse and ecologically complex, and support specialist plants adapted to local conditions. Marketing strategist Sam Holloway says the company goes to great lengths to get each mix right.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt takes about five years to perfect a mix \u2013 we want to ensure continuity of flowering so that pollinators gain maximum benefit and you get a nice succession of colour, which changes to maintain visual impact throughout the flowering period,\u201d Holloway says.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0goes on to explain that the chosen species\u00a0are unlikely to become invasive precisely because they are cleared every year or two, and are easily crowed out by subsequent The same lack of ecological understanding has undoubtedly led to some appalling cases of verge mismanagement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"&quot;page&quot;\" title=\"&quot;Page\">\n<div class=\"&quot;section&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;layoutArea&quot;\">\n<div class=\"&quot;column&quot;\">\n<p>In April 2019, a verge managed\u00a0as a roadside nature reserve by <a href=\"\/\/www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk&quot;\" target=\"&quot;_blank&quot;\" rel=\"&quot;noopener noopener noreferrer\" noreferrer=\"\">Kent Wildlife Trust<\/a> was scraped by contractors carrying out drainage work, destroying an estimated 17,000 orchids in one day.<\/p>\n<p>Wiltshire County Council came in for heavy criticism on social media when it released pictures of the work of so called \u2018sparkle teams\u2019, stripping wildflowers from pavement cracks and wall crevices in Bradford on Avon. You don\u2019t have to look far for multiple examples of mowing verges in full flower, or flailing hedges during the nesting season.<\/p>\n<h3>Promoting pollinators<\/h3>\n<p>In Rotherham, the policy is to cut the first metre of grassy verge to protect drivers\u2019\u00a0sightlines, and leave the rest \u2013 only cutting the whole strip at the end\u00a0of the year. The city\u2019s pollinator scheme is being extended, too. \u201cWe have made planting for\u00a0pollinators a main theme of our Street Pride Services\u00a0programme,\u201d says councillor Green.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve instigated pollinator-friendly planting on green\u00a0spaces around\u00a0our properties; our landscape- design team now offers guidance to people and organisations considering planning applications; and the annual garden competition for council tenants now includes a category for the most pollinator-friendly patch.\u201d<\/p>\n<div
