Despite being classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature<\/a> and a lack of demand for the meat, Icelandic whalers killed 148 fin whales last year.<\/p>\n
The species is the second-longest marine mammal after the blue whale<\/a>.<\/p>\n
Iceland has only one remaining whaling company, Hvalur, and its licence to hunt fin whales runs out in 2023.<\/p>\n
Danny Groves from WDC adds, \u201cWhaling normally runs from June to September and so getting the vessels ready to hunt after this date is unlikely. No new licences have been issued for 2024 onwards.\u201d<\/p>\n
