If not why not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">We take a look at why Ireland is, and has always been, snake-free <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 27 October 2023 at 16:35 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Ireland is one of only a few countries in the world that has no snakes. <\/strong><\/p><h2 id=\"h-why-aren-t-there-snakes-in-ireland\">Why aren&#8217;t there snakes in Ireland?<\/h2><p>Much of Britain and Ireland\u2019s flora and fauna arrived here after the last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/ice-age-animals\">ice age<\/a>.<\/p><p>As the glaciers retreated about 10,000 years ago, animals and plants were able to recolonise from mainland Europe, to which Britain was connected by a land bridge. <\/p><p>The Irish Sea, though, proved too big an obstacle for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/snakes-uk-british-isles\">three British species of snake<\/a> \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/facts-about-grass-snakes\">grass snake<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/facts-about-smooth-snakes\">smooth snake<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/facts-about-adders\"> adder<\/a> \u2013 that had made it to Britain, so Ireland remained snake-free. Another reptile did make it though, and is now Ireland&#8217;s only reptile: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/common-lizard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">common lizard<\/a>.
