Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">marine animals<\/a> are indicators of changes in water temperatures. Research has suggested that an increase in some jellyfish numbers around UK could be related to climate change, however, currently there isn\u2019t enough evidence to make this link. <\/p><p>\u201cJellyfish populations are highly variable year on year, and depend on several environmental factors that are different each year, such as sea temperatures and storms,&#8221; said Dr Peter Richardson, Head of Ocean Recovery\u00a0at the MCS.<\/p><p>&#8220;Numbers of sightings we receive can also depend on the awareness of our sightings programme and the \u2018wow factor\u2019 of jellyfish people encounter. \u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThis year seems to have been a particularly good year for barrel jellyfish \u2013 one of our chunkiest jellyfish species that can occur in mind-boggling numbers when conditions are favourable. It\u2019s only by observing trends over many years that we can start to suggest reasons for change.\u201d \u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1713\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/11\/Lions-mane-jellyfish-1-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Jellyfish floating in the sea\" class=\"wp-image-92052\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">17.7% of the sightings were lion&#8217;s mane jellyfish\/Credit: Peter Bardsley, MCS<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Justine Millard, Head of Volunteering and Citizen Science at the MCS, added, \u201cThe data on jellyfish and turtles that volunteers submit\u00a0plays a vital role in understanding the changes occurring in our marine ecosystems, and help us to protect our seas. We urge anyone who has spotted a jellyfish or turtle to report it to us to continue to build a picture of our seas and the incredible life within them. This is an increase of 21% compared to the previous year\u2019s results, when it was the sixth most-spotted species.\u00a0Barrel jellyfish are sometimes called \u2018dustbin lid jellyfish\u2019 due to their large size \u2013 they can grow up to one metre in diameter.\u00a0They have a solid, spherical, rubbery-looking bell which can be white, pale pink, blue or yellow. Rather than tentacles, barrel jellyfish have eight thick, frilled arms.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1706\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/11\/Barrel-jellyfish-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Barrel jellyfish floating in the sea\" class=\"wp-image-92050\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">26.7% of the jellyfish sightings were barrel jellyfish\/Credit: Peter Bardsley, MCS<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The report features other intriguing jellyfish-like species, including crystal and comb jellies, and sea gooseberries, which made up 10% of the total sightings this year. Crystal jellyfish were the most reported &#8216;other&#8217; species, accounting for 3.2% of all sightings.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Jellyfish of the UK\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IIxWqTTXeaY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Learn more about the UK&#8217;s jellyfish\/Credit: The Wildlife Trusts<\/figcaption><\/figure><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><h2>Marine turtles in the UK<\/h2><p>The MCS also records reports of marine turtles, which feed on jellyfish.\u00a0Six of the world\u2019s seven marine turtle species have been spotted in UK and Irish seas.
