It’s a saying you might be familiar with, particularly if you listen to the popular podcast by the QI Elves, but how true is it? Is there really no such thing as a fish? <\/p>
In days gone by, the word \u2018fish\u2019 was pinned to virtually any creature that lurked beneath the waterline. Gradually, as people paid more attention to the biology of those animals, it became clear that some \u2018fish\u2019 belonged to other groups, such as reptiles or mammals.<\/p>
This left a motley collection of aquatic vertebrates, including sharks,<\/a> stingrays, hagfish, sturgeon, lungfish, goldfish and tuna<\/a>. They are all animals that (usually) breathe through gills, have bodies covered in scales (though not always) and limbs in the form of fins.<\/p> The problem is that birds<\/a>, frogs, lizards,<\/a> turtles<\/a>, mammals<\/a> and all the other vertebrates evolved from fish ancestors.
