To \u201calmost guarantee success,\u201d Andre Van Kets (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverafrica.com\/\">Discover Africa<\/a>) recommends \u201cstaying three to six days at the adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sabisand.travel\/\">Sabi Sands reserve<\/a>\u201d. <\/p><p>At this agglomeration of upmarket private reserves, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/how-different-are-northern-and-southern-white-rhinos\">white rhino<\/a> is relatively common and leopards comparatively habituated. Jeeps are permitted to drive \u2018off road\u2019, while bush walks provide intimate encounters. In the northern Kruger, try Timbavati, where a group of \u2018white\u2019 lions have a genetic quirk of uniquely pale fur.<\/p><p\/><h3><strong>Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, Tanzania<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Ngorongoro Crater &amp; Conservation Area, Tanzania [Amazing Places 4K]\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/45eddk-pMuY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>In East Africa, black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-rhinos\">rhino<\/a> can be hard to encounter, so strengthen your chances by visiting the Ngorongoro Crater, an immense volcanic caldera that hosts decent numbers of this armoured mammal. You\u2019ll also find some of Africa\u2019s biggest bull <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-elephants\">elephants<\/a> here, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-lions\">lion<\/a> and buffalo populations are vibrant. Seeing migrating wildebeest, meanwhile, is a truly spectacular experience. Leopard can be tricky in Ngorongoro, so Andre Van Kets (Discover Africa) recommends an excursion into the northern Serengeti.\u00a0<\/p><h3><strong>Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Lewa-Wildlife-Conservancy.jpg\" alt=\"Lewa Wildlife Conservancy Kenya is one of the best places to see Africa's big 5\" class=\"wp-image-93106\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Safari cognoscenti suggest Lewa might offer Kenya\u2019s finest Big Five experience. Sited on the Laikipia Plateau with a backdrop of Mount Kenya, Lewa\u2019s operations have long been strongly conservation-focused. <\/p><p>Unusually, the site harbours both black and white rhinos, but African elephants are only seasonal visitors. Former Kenya resident Aisha Gross (<a href=\"https:\/\/cazloyd.com\/\">cazenove loyd<\/a>) prizes Lewa\u2019s exclusivity, which makes for particularly\u00a0 tranquil wildlife watching: \u201cNo more than three vehicles are allowed at a sighting,\u201d she explains. Nicola Shepherd (The Explorations Company) recommends staying at the \u201cwonderful\u201d family-run Lewa Wilderness Lodge, which \u201coffers game-viewing by electric vehicle or camel, on foot and on horseback\u201d.\u00a0<\/p><p\/><h3><strong>Chobe National Park, Botswana<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Chobe-National-Park.jpg\" alt=\"Chobe National Park is one of the best places to see Africa's big five\" class=\"wp-image-93108\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Botswana\u2019s most likely site for viewing the Big Five, the varied landscapes of Chobe cover nearly 11,000 km<sup>2<\/sup> of the northern Kalahari. Large herds of buffalo and African elephant follow seasonal migrations dictated by water availability. In the dry season, thousands come from as far away as Zimbabwe\u2019s Hwange National Park to congregate beside Chobe\u2019s permanent rivers. <\/p><p>Lion is common but leopard less so, while black and white rhinos are being reintroduced to quieter areas after poaching wiped out populations. For better prospects of rhinos, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africaandbeyond.co.uk\/africa-holidays\/botswana\/moremi-game-reserve\">Moremi Game Reserve<\/a>, where operators offer \u2018mobile safaris\u2019, establishing exclusive, temporary camps in remote areas<\/p><h3><strong>Madikwe Game Reserve, North West Province, South Africa<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2072\" height=\"1446\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Madikwe-Game-Reserve.jpg\" alt=\"Madikwe Game Reserve is one of the best places to see Africa's big 5\" class=\"wp-image-93110\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Formerly unproductive ranchland, Madikwe was rewilded and restocked in 1991, and now offers 30 high-end camps and lodges. Located along the Botswana border, Madikwe\u2019s altitude renders it malaria-free. As well as the Big Five, Madikwe boasts \u201cpretty much everything you\u2019d expect in the Kruger,\u201d says Mike Unwin, author of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Southern-African-Wildlife-Travel-Guides\/dp\/1784779180\" rel=\"nofollow\">Bradt\u2019s <em>Southern African Wildlife<\/em><\/a>, \u201cplus species characteristic of more western areas such as red hartebeest and brown hyena, as well as successfully reintroduced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-african-wild-dogs\">African wild dogs<\/a>\u201d. There\u2019s even more besides: night drives, for example, offer prospects of the bizarre, enigmatic aardwolf.\u00a0<\/p><h3><strong>Majete Wildlife Reserve, Malawi\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2122\" height=\"1412\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Majete-Wildlife-Reserve-is-one-of-the-best-places-to-see-Africas-big-5.jpg\" alt=\"Majete Wildlife Reserve is one of the best places to see Africa's big five\" class=\"wp-image-93112\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Forget hordes of tourists in safari jeeps crowding round a lion kill or a leopard family. Malawi\u2019s sole location for the Big Five does things differently. Barely 20 years ago, almost all Majete\u2019s mammals had been hunted out, and tourists never visited. <\/p><p>The non-profit organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africanparks.org\/the-parks\/majete\">African Parks<\/a> assumed management responsibility in 2003, and has since reintroduced thousands of mammals. With only two lodges, Majete offers an exclusive experience, but without breaking the bank. \u201cMajete provides an affordable alternative to other parks,\u201d says Crafted Africa\u2019s Mike Varndell, \u201cwith a more intimate, secluded environment. It has become a symbol of wildlife recovery.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p><strong>South and North Luangwa National Parks, Zambia<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2117\" height=\"1416\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/South-Luangwa-National-Parks.jpg\" alt=\"South Luangwa National Park is one of the best places to see Africa's big 5\" class=\"wp-image-93113\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The sister national parks of South Luangwa and North Luangwa are typically visited in tandem. And for those seeking the Big Five in Zambia, this is just as well. South Luangwa holds four of the quintet, boasts phenomenally high mammal densities and highly rated guides. What\u2019s more, the park encourages night drives and is renowned for the comparative ease with which leopards can be seen. But only North Luangwa, where walking safaris are much vaunted, harbours black rhino. Despite ample accommodation options, the reserves\u2019 combined area of 15,000km<sup>2<\/sup> makes the Luangwas feel wilder and freer of people than almost any rival reserve.<\/p> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Planning a safari of a lifetime?
