Stuart Blackman explains <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 29 December 2023 at 06:48 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>Named after the wedge-shaped stone at the top of an arch, which locks the other stones into position and prevents collapse, a keystone species is one that plays a central role in the structure of an ecosystem.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-eurasian-beavers\">Beavers<\/a>, for example, physically change the landscape through their dam-building, creating habitats used by other species. And some top <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/apex-predators-what-they-are\">predators<\/a> enable diverse vegetation to flourish by controlling the number of grazing animals.<\/p><p>The term does not apply to just any influential organisms. Crucially, keystone species are those that have a disproportionately large effect relative to their abundance. It would not apply to, say, trees or reef-building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-coral-reefs\">corals<\/a>, which have a huge effect on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/plant-facts\/habitats-vs-ecosystems\">ecosystems <\/a>because of their abundance.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/ecosystem-engineers\">Ecosystem engineers: what they are and 7 of the best ecosystem engineers<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>According to Robert Paine, the zoologist who coined the phrase &#8216;keystone species&#8217; in the 1960s, it \u201cwas intended to convey a sense of nature\u2019s dynamic fragility and the unsuspected consequences of removing (or adding) species\u201d.<\/p><p>Paine had experimentally removed ochre <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/do-starfish-have-arms-or-legs\">starfish<\/a> from areas of rocky shore, which led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/how-do-mussels-cling-to-rocks\">mussels<\/a> \u2013 the starfish\u2019s prey \u2013 crowding out other encrusting organisms.<\/p><p>Other keystone species include sea <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/otters-of-the-world\">otters<\/a>, which are highly influential in the functioning of kelp forests, and wolves, whose loss from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/holidays-days-out\/north-americas\/yellowstone-national-park-usa-wildlife\">Yellowstone<\/a> \u2013 and subsequent reintroduction \u2013 had dramatic effects on the national park\u2019s ecology.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/environment\/the-sixth-extinction\">The Sixth Extinction: what it is, what is causing it &#8211; and how many species we are losing<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/pecking-order-meaning\">Pecking order meaning: what it is and why &#8216;pecking order&#8217; is crucial for survival<\/a><\/li><\/ul> <\/body><\/html>\n<hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is a keystone species?
