However the scientists believe that these defensive adaptations were unable to prevent Timorebestia from eating Isoxys in vast numbers.

“Both arrow worms and the more primitive Timorebestia, were swimming predators,” says Dr Vinther.

“We can therefore surmise that in all likelihood they were the predators that dominated the oceans before arthropods took off. Perhaps they had a dynasty of about 10-15 million years before they got superseded by other and more successful groups.”

Main illustration credit: Bob Nicholls Art

Fossil remains reveal completely new group of gigantic oceanic predators that existed more than half a billion years ago.

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland.jpg",1890,1454,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland-300x231.jpg",300,231,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland-768x591.jpg",768,591,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland-1024x788.jpg",800,616,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland-1536x1182.jpg",1536,1182,true],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/01/giant-pre-historic-worms-discovered-in-greenland.jpg",1890,1454,false
Fossil remains reveal completely new group of gigantic oceanic predators that existed more than half a billion years ago.
