Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cA partial moratorium in 10 locations is a good solution, but only for a short while,\u201d says Aleksandra Wiktor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org\/poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Greenpeace Poland<\/a> biodiversity campaigner. \u201cUltimately, it is necessary to permanently stop logging in many more places.\u201d<\/p><p>Poland is home to some of Europe\u2019s last surviving ancient forests, which are home to important populations of brown bears, lynx and wolves, whilst Bia\u0142owie\u017ca forest is home to around 800 European bison.<\/p><p>Uncontrolled and controversial logging has however threatened the long-term future of all these forests.<\/p><p>\u201cThe most valuable old-growth forests, such as the Bia\u0142owie\u017can and Carpathian forests need immediate and permanent protection,\u201d says\u00a0Wiktor.\u00a0\u201cThey have been devastated in recent years by irresponsible logging carried out by state forests politicized by the\u00a0previous government.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/02\/Wild-boar-in-Bialowieza-forest.jpg\" alt=\"Wild boar in forest\" class=\"wp-image-94992\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wild boar ar\u0119 one of several large mammals to roam Bia\u0142owie\u017ca forest. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The wildlife in Bia\u0142owie\u017ca forest is also threatened by a 186km long and 5m high razor-wire fence running along the Polish-Belarusian border, which was built in 2022 to prevent asylum seekers from entering the country.<\/p><p>The fence, which effectively divides the huge forest in half, constitutes an impassable barrier for extremely sensitive animals including bison and lynx.<\/p><p>\u201cAnimal migration routes are blocked, which may lead to the collapse of the lynx population in the Polish part of Bia\u0142owie\u017ca,\u201d says Wiktor, adding that: \u201ctherefore it is necessary to protect the Carpathian (lynx) population and those found in other regions even more effectively.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"765\" height=\"456\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/02\/Bialowieza-forest-1.jpg\" alt=\"Misty autumnal coniferous stand\" class=\"wp-image-94994\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Poland is home to some of Europe\u2019s last surviving ancient forests, including Bia\u0142owie\u017ca forest.
