They are then killed and eaten as part of the traditional ‘ambelopoulia’ dish. However, this autumn shows that more still needs to be done,” says Mark Thomas, head of RSPB investigations.

“We cannot allow the progress we have made to be undone and the shocking levels of songbird killings to return to the abhorrent levels we once saw. By working together we can make this a thing of the past,” adds Thomas.

An estimated 435,000 migrating songbirds, including blackcaps (pictured) were illegally caught and killed on Cyprus in the autumn of 2023. People who illegally eat these birds ghoulishly consider them to be of better quality at this time on account of this higher fat content.

Birds returning from Africa in the spring on the other hand will have depleted most of their fat reserves and are therefore judged to be of lower quality.

To find out more about how the RSPB is working with BirdLife Cyprus and both the British and Cypriot governments to protect songbirds on the island please visit: https://birdlifecyprus.org/combating-bird-crime/

More news about birds

Gannet and great skua among UK seabirds devastated by avian flu, finds new report

Raptors in freefall: Birds of prey experiencing population collapse across Africa

Monk parakeets may be able to talk like humans, finds new study

Progress to reduce the number of birds illegally killed on the island is at risk if support to tackle criminal gangs isn’t maintained, says report.

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus.jpg",1800,1200,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus-300x200.jpg",300,200,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus-768x512.jpg",768,512,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus-1024x683.jpg",800,534,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus-1536x1024.jpg",1536,1024,true],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/03/songbird-slaughter-almost-half-a-million-birds-trapped-and-killed-by-gangs-in-cyprus.jpg",1800,1200,false
Progress to reduce the number of birds illegally killed on the island is at risk if support to tackle criminal gangs isn't maintained, says report.
