These animals find much of their prey on the seabed, moving with ease among fronds of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/how-to\/identify-wildlife\/how-to-identify-seaweed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">kelp<\/a> suspended in the water. During low spring tides, however, the \u2018fallen forest\u2019 is more akin to an obstacle course, and foraging is much more challenging.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back from the sea<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Back_from_the_sea.jpg\" alt=\"shetland wildlife puffins\" class=\"wp-image-98847\"\/><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/10-best-places-to-see-a-puffin-in-the-british-isles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Puffins<\/a> usually start to arrive back on Shetland\u2019s clifftops during the first week of April, having spent more than seven months weathering the wildest storms in the open ocean. Once safely back on land, the birds rekindle their pair-bonds and reclaim their breeding burrows.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Storm warning<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Storm_warning.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland North Atlantic sea\" class=\"wp-image-98851\"\/><\/figure><p>January and February bring gale-force winds to Shetland. Waves, powered by the North Atlantic, reach more than 12m in height and mercilessly pound the coast.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pretty in purple<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Pretty_in_purple.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland saxifrage\" class=\"wp-image-98853\"\/><\/figure><p>Confined to Northmavine, the wild and rugged north-west corner of Mainland Shetland, purple saxifrage is an early spring speciality and a welcome splash of colour. \u201cIt reminds us of the botanical beauty in store,\u201d says Brydon.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hungry mouths<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Hungry_mouths.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife skylark\" class=\"wp-image-98855\"\/><\/figure><p>Having spent the winter in milder climes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/hope-for-skylarks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">skylarks<\/a> start to arrive during February. Here, four hungry hatchlings beg for food, their patterned tongues and vivid gapes ensuring their parents know exactly where to place the food.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flight fantastic<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Flight_fantastic.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife gannets\" class=\"wp-image-98856\"\/><\/figure><p>Prolific and successful seabirds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/holidays-days-out\/uk\/where-to-see-gannets-in-the-uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gannets<\/a> have been breeding on Shetland since 1914, famously on the stacks of Hermaness. They are masters of the air, soaring in synchrony over their colonies.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Miniature magic<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Miniature_magic.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife wood mouse\" class=\"wp-image-98858\"\/><\/figure><p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-wood-mouse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wood mouse<\/a>, known locally as the \u2018hill moose\u2019, leaps through long grass. Its nickname is an apt one, as the species tends to favour hills, moorland and pastureland. It is one of only three rodents found on Shetland, along with the house mouse and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/how-to\/identify-wildlife\/how-to-tell-the-difference-between-a-brown-rat-and-a-water-vole\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">brown rat<\/a>.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Flock together<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Flock_together.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife starling\" class=\"wp-image-98861\"\/><\/figure><p>Shetland has its own subspecies of common <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-starling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">starling<\/a>, which sports a slightly longer bill. Here, these sociable birds flock over a field of dazzling buttercups.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeking sandiloo<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Seeking_sandiloo.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife ringed plover\" class=\"wp-image-98865\"\/><\/figure><p>Shetland hosts a healthy breeding population of ringed plovers, handsome birds that occur in a variety of habitats from shingle beaches to the highest hills. \u201cThe ringed plover has one of our nicest-sounding dialect names \u2013 \u2018sandiloo\u2019,\u201d says Brydon.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autumn arrivals<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Autumn_arrivals.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife long-eared owl\" class=\"wp-image-98866\"\/><\/figure><p>The long-eared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/uk-owl-guide-how-to-identify-where-to-see\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owl<\/a> is one of Shetland\u2019s two commonly recorded owls (the other is the short-eared). In flight, its usually prominent ear tufts are held flat. In autumn and winter, more individuals arrive from elsewhere in Europe, often returning to the same roost-sites in gardens and plantations.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lady in waiting<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Lady_in_waiting.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife lady admirial butterfly\" class=\"wp-image-98867\"\/><\/figure><p>Basking in the sunshine, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/the-year-of-the-painted-lady\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">painted lady<\/a> is one of just five species of butterfly regularly sighted on Shetland. Studies have recently revealed that those that emerge in northern Europe in late summer migrate at an average height of more than 500m back to the regions of tropical Africa that their grandparents (or great-grandparents) originated from earlier in the year.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Magic merlin<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Magic_merlin.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife merlin\" class=\"wp-image-98869\"\/><\/figure><p>The merlin is a rare bird of prey in the UK. Even in Shetland, which is considered the species\u2019 stronghold, the breeding population numbers little more than 30 pairs. As with all falcons, males are smaller than the females and do most of the hunting. Successful broods of four or five are not uncommon, with the young fledging at 30 days.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wax and wane<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Wax_and_wane.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife waxwing\" class=\"wp-image-98873\"\/><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/bohemian-waxwing-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waxwing<\/a> is an irruptive migrant, meaning it moves in large numbers according to food availability. These flamboyant birds are usually scarce visitors to Shetland, but in years when fruiting trees in Scandinavia and Russia yield poor crops, they can arrive in decent numbers.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Going the distance<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Going_the_distance.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife arctic tern\" class=\"wp-image-98874\"\/><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/arctic-terns-travel-faster-in-large-flocks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arctic terns<\/a> spend the summer months of May to September on Shetland. These hardy birds undertake the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/worlds-longest-bird-migration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">longest avian migration<\/a> in the world, travelling from pole to pole.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Daylight hunter<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Daylight_hunter.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife\" class=\"wp-image-98876\"\/><\/figure><p>Separated by more than 160km of ocean, Shetland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/holidays-days-out\/uk\/10-great-places-to-see-otters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">otters<\/a> have become genetically isolated from those elsewhere in the UK. Unlike those on the mainland, they are primarily diurnal hunters, due to the fact that the majority of their prey is nocturnal, and thus easier to catch while resting on the seabed during daylight hours. Otters locate prey through their finely tuned whiskers, which they use to sense the movement of fish.<\/p><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-wide\"\/><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ocean giants<\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Ocean_giant_1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Shetland wildlife humpback whales\" class=\"wp-image-98932\"\/><\/figure><p>As in other British and Irish waters, sightings of humpback whales have increased around Shetland in the past decade. The upturn is likely due to changes in prey distribution and altered migration routes as a result of global warming. The whales can turn up at any time of year, but most frequently in winter.
