They are a member of the Phasianidae family, which includes the pheasant.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quahog Clam<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1002\" height=\"776\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/cean-quahog-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99178\"\/><\/figure><p>Walking a strandline you might meet a member of the oldest species on Earth.<\/p><p>At first sight, though, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/ocean-quahog\">ocean quahog<\/a> is just a fairly plain, quite large and rounded clam. As with all clams, its shell is made up of two hinged parts called valves that protect the soft body parts inside. <\/p><p>When fresh and alive, the ocean quahog is covered in a dark, skin-like layer called the periostracum, so it\u2019s also known as a black or mahogany clam.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quaker parrot<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Quaker-parrot-scaled.jpg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99217\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Native to a small part of South America, from central Bolivia and southern Brazil into parts of central Argentina, the quaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/parrots-guide\">parrot<\/a> (also known as the monk parakeet) is famed for its vivid green colouring. <\/p><p>They are social birds and often build nests next to each other and whole communities can develop.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Queen parrotfish<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"VIDEO: Parrotfish Builds Mucus Cocoon for Protection During Sleep | Oceana\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zdzAUQ4juH4?start=52&amp;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fish\/queen-parrotfish-mucus-bubble\">queen parrotfish <em>Scarus vetula<\/em><\/a> is by day a beautiful and diver-friendly reef fish. <\/p><p>By night, it\u2019s a reclusive slime-bag. Literally thanks to its special glands behind its gills. This secretes a bubble of mucus that swells up and over its head like a diving helmet. The pouch spreads towards the fish\u2019s tail and, within 30 minutes or so, the fish is resting inside a surprisingly spacious sac of slime. <\/p><p>Thanks to this strange phenomenon we named it one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fish\/weirdest-fish\">weirdest fish in the world<\/a><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quetzals<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/Quetzal.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99219\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The elusive yet resplendent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/national-bird-guatemala-quetzal\">quetzal <\/a>is the national bird of Guatemala and one of six species of quetzal that live in the cloud forests of Central America. <\/p><p>This iconic bird, with its iridescent green head and wings, spiky green crest, blood-red breast, and flamboyant twin tail plumes, is like the avian version of a carnival dancer. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Queen Alexandra\u2019s Birdwing Butterfly\u00a0<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/05\/biggest-butterfly-3f513d0.jpg\" alt=\"the Queen Alexandra's birdwing butterfly is the biggest butterfly in the world\" class=\"wp-image-77197\"\/><\/figure><p>This is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/whats-the-worlds-biggest-butterfly\">largest butterfly in the world<\/a>. Found in the rainforests of Papua New Guinea, the female Queen Alexandra butterfly has a wingspan in excess of 28cm, while its body is 8cm long. It weighs approx 12g. They are a similar size as their cousins and are only found in the the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qinling_Mountains\">Qinling Mountains<\/a> &#8211; hence its name.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quokka<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/GettyImages-1708294203.mp4\"\/><\/figure><p>This cute Australian marsupial is about the size of a domestic cat and lives in southwestern\u00a0Australia. Although it usually scrambles along on all fours its powerful hind legs also allow it to leap like a rabbit and can look like a very small <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/how-and-why-do-kangaroos-hop\">kangaroo<\/a>. <\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Quoll<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2120\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/04\/quoll.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-99199\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The Quoll is another Australian marsupial &#8211; although two subspecies are found on New Zealand. <\/p><p>In Australia there are four sub species, which all vary in size and weight, from 300g to 7kg.
