{"id":38202,"date":"2024-05-03T18:28:15","date_gmt":"2024-05-03T16:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a0563235-af4a-4a75-aec2-464d2cf591a1"},"modified":"2024-05-03T19:35:40","modified_gmt":"2024-05-03T17:35:40","slug":"orangutans-magic-medicine-scientists-stunned-at-first-ever-wild-animal-seen-using-plant-to-heal-a-wound","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/orangutans-magic-medicine-scientists-stunned-at-first-ever-wild-animal-seen-using-plant-to-heal-a-wound\/","title":{"rendered":"Orangutan&#8217;s magic medicine: scientists stunned at first-ever wild animal seen using plant to heal a wound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Watch orangutan using medicinal plant to heal its wound <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 03 May 2024 at 16:28 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p>A\u00a0Sumatran\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-orangutans\">Orangutan<\/a> in\u00a0Indonesia\u00a0has been observed healing a nasty wound on its face by making a poultice from a native plant known\u00a0to\u00a0locals\u00a0as having\u00a0healing properties.\u00a0<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/what-are-primates\">primate<\/a> chewed the stems and leaves of the\u00a0Akar\u00a0Kuning\u00a0plant\u00a0(<em>Fibraurea\u00a0tinctoria<\/em>), a type of liana vine,\u00a0and\u00a0repeatedly\u00a0spread the juice and shredded leaves on his open wound over a number of days.\u00a0<\/p><p>Traditionally, the plant has been used by Sumatran\u00a0islanders\u00a0as an anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal\u00a0and anti-bacterial medication. But this\u00a0was\u00a0an almost unique observation of\u00a0a wild animal\u00a0of any species\u00a0seeking\u00a0out a specific plant to cure an injury.<\/p><p\/><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Wild orangutan actively treats wound with a healing plant\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p_Sb4xwaDOA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>Although there are recorded instances of primates in other parts of the world swallowing whole leaves and nibbling bitter pith, as well as rubbing their fur\u00a0with\u00a0medicinal foliage,\u00a0to medicate against parasites\u00a0or perhaps alleviate muscle pains,\u00a0until now\u00a0there has only ever been one\u00a0isolated\u00a0report of wound treatment with plant material.<\/p><p>The orangutan,\u00a0a male about 35 years of age,\u00a0known as\u00a0Rakus, lives in the peat swamp forests of\u00a0Gunung\u00a0Leuser\u00a0National Park on the island of Sumatra in the Indonesian archipelago. <\/p><p>A research team in the Park noticed in June 2022 that\u00a0Rakus\u00a0had a large open wound on his facial flange,\u00a0or cheek pad, close to his right eye, that looked swollen and infected. They assumed\u00a0it must have been the result of a fight with a rival male,\u00a0as\u00a0Rakus\u00a0had become\u00a0sexually active less than a year before. He\u00a0had been heard \u2018long calling\u2019\u00a0in\u00a0previous days in\u00a0an effort\u00a0to\u00a0assert\u00a0dominance.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/do-any-primates-self-medicate\">Do any primates self-medicate?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>About three days after he received the wound,\u00a0Rakus\u00a0was seen chewing the leaves of the plant and smearing the juice from his mouth over the raw patch. When flies settled on the wound,\u00a0he spat out some leaf mash and spread it over the painful area until it was completely covered. <\/p><p>He repeated his treatment regularly over the next few days,\u00a0and also rested\u00a0more than usual.\u00a0This behaviour and the\u00a0frequent\u00a0re-application of the poultice to\u00a0the\u00a0wound removed doubt that\u00a0Rakus\u2019 actions were accidental.\u00a0What is\u00a0also\u00a0known is that orangutans rarely eat that particular plant, so its choice would seem to\u00a0have\u00a0been\u00a0deliberate and related to dealing with the injury.<\/p><p>Eight days\u00a0after the wound was first noticed,\u00a0scientists could see that\u00a0the raw skin\u00a0had completely closed up and\u00a0months later\u00a0there\u00a0is\u00a0now\u00a0barely any scarring left to show where\u00a0the orangutan\u00a0was\u00a0injured &#8211; see below.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"\/><p>Whether\u00a0Rakus\u00a0was using\u00a0the plant because he\u00a0was conscious that\u00a0it would help\u00a0to\u00a0heal his wound, or\u00a0because he was copying what he had seen\u00a0other orangutans doing\u00a0with their wounds, is still the subject of debate amongst researchers.\u00a0The\u00a0Akar\u00a0Kuning\u00a0plant has\u00a0pain-relieving properties\u00a0so\u00a0Rakus\u00a0may have accidentally touched the plant in the past and noticed that it\u00a0soothed a sore finger, for instance.\u00a0<\/p><p>The orangutans in the study area are well nourished and generally peaceful so not many of them sustain wounds as bad as\u00a0Rakus\u2019. This has made it difficult for\u00a0scientists\u00a0to\u00a0establish\u00a0if other members of\u00a0the species in the area\u00a0also self-medicate their injuries. Researchers\u2019\u00a0efforts are now focussed on gathering more information on this aspect of\u00a0orangutan\u00a0behaviour.<\/p><p>Overall, the\u00a0study adds to the knowledge scientists have been gathering\u00a0around the world\u00a0about the origins of human\u00a0wound care\u00a0and whether the use of medicinal plants was behaviour\u00a0learned by\u00a0our\u00a0ancient\u00a0ancestors\u00a0from observing\u00a0their\u00a0closest\u00a0primate\u00a0relatives<\/p><p\/><hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/><p>Research published in the Open Access\u00a0<em>Scientific Reports<\/em><\/p><p>Main image: Rakus feeding on\u00a0<em>Fibraurea tinctoria<\/em>\u00a0leaves (photo taken on June 26, the day after applying the plant mesh to the wound).
