{"id":38973,"date":"2024-06-04T10:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-06-04T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/8220c73f-c651-467a-bdae-5f103e8fffd7"},"modified":"2024-06-04T10:27:29","modified_gmt":"2024-06-04T08:27:29","slug":"snake-venom-cure-scientists-develop-fake-blood-vessels-to-help-reduce-deadly-bites","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/snake-venom-cure-scientists-develop-fake-blood-vessels-to-help-reduce-deadly-bites\/","title":{"rendered":"Snake venom cure: Scientists develop fake blood vessels to help reduce deadly bites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The artificial blood vessels will make it possible to see exactly how snake venom attacks human blood, without having to use laboratory animals, say scientists. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Daniel Graham\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 04 June 2024 at 08:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Estimates suggest that 80,000 to 140,000 people die each year from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/deadliest-snakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">venomous snake bites<\/a>, while another 400,000 suffer chronic injuries such as blindness or limb loss.<\/strong><\/p><p>Despite the urgent need for researchers to develop antidotes, studying the way snake venom works has been challenging.\u00a0<\/p><p>Now scientists from the Netherlands have designed a 3D model that replicates blood vessels to better understand how snake venom impacts blood. <\/p><p>The innovative \u2018organ-on-a-chip\u2019 model also eliminates the need for animal testing, say the scientists.<\/p><p>The study, developed by researchers at <a href=\"https:\/\/vu.nl\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimetas.com\/en\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MIMETAS<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naturalis.nl\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Naturalis Biodiversity Center<\/a>, was published today in\u00a0<em>Springer Nature<\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Researchers tested the blood vessel model with venoms from various snake species, including the Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica). Credit: Wolfgang Wuster<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/deadliest-snakes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 deadliest snakes in the world<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/venomous-vs-poisonous\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Venomous vs poisonous: what&#8217;s the difference?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/worlds-longest-snake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is the longest snake in the world?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-the-technology-work\">How does the technology work?<\/h2><p>Lead author of the study and venom expert M\u00e1ty\u00e1s Bittenbinder told <em>BBC Wildlife<\/em> that venomous snake bites typically cause severe internal bleeding by targeting the circulatory system, breaking down blood vessels and forming clots.\u00a0&#8220;Understanding the components of snake venom better equips us to neutralise its toxins,&#8221; says Bittenbinder.<\/p><p>The organ-on-a-chip technology offers significant advancements over traditional methods, such as animal testing or cell cultures, by accurately mimicking human blood vessels.<\/p><p>&#8220;The benefit of this blood vessel model for venom research is its ability to simulate several critical physiological factors,&#8221; Bittenbinder explains. The 3D model enhances the understanding of how snake venom damages blood vessels, how it affects blood flow and its impact on the human body.<\/p><p>Researchers tested the blood vessel model with venoms from the Indian cobra (Naja naja), West-African carpet viper (Echis ocellatus), many-banded krait (Bungarus multicinctus) and Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica).<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/05\/A-3D-reconstruction-of-a-blood-vessel.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/05\/A-3D-reconstruction-of-a-blood-vessel.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">3D reconstruction of a blood vessel being attacked by snake venom.
