In high concentrations, the corals form Marine Animal Forests (MAFs), rare ecosystems of exceptional ecological value found on only 0.1% of the world&#8217;s seabeds.<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-024-60207-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The scientific report<\/a>,\u00a0<em>&#8220;The southernmost Errina Antarctica hydrocoral savannah in Patagonian waters,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0was published in the journal\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hydrocorals are found on just 0.1% of seabeds around the world. Credit: Pablo Zavala, Rewilding Chile<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/coral-reef-spawning-in-cambodia?preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Watch: Astonishing \u2018explosion of life\u2019 coral spawning in Cambodia stuns scientists<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/reef-stars-coral-reef-restoration\">Scientists have developed an amazing new technique to restore coral reefs<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/coral-superhighway-found-in-indian-ocean?preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8216;Coral superhighway&#8217; spanning more than one million square kilometres found in Indian Ocean<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>&#8220;The structural complexity generated by MAFs on the seabed is used by numerous species to settle and live, hide, feed or reproduce, so they are also true hotspots of biodiversity,&#8221; says Ana De la Torriente, co-author of the study and researcher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieo.es\/en\/acerca-del-ieo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spanish Institute of Oceanography<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p><p>The team documented numerous species among the corals, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/sea-urchins?preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sea urchins<\/a>, basket and sticky ray stars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/hermit-crab-facts?preview=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hermit crabs<\/a>, sea anemones, false king crabs, sea snails, parchment worms and sponges.<\/p><p>For this reason, red corals are considered &#8216;ecosystem engineers&#8217; and they are vital to the development of the seabed. <\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/05\/Red-Hydrocorals.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Watch: Red corals documented by researchers in the Patagonian Sea. Credit: Rewilding Chile<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The colonies of\u00a0<em>Errina Antarctica<\/em>\u00a0documented in the Kaw\u00e9sqar National Marine Reserve cover up to 28.5% of the seafloor, at depths between 1.23 to 33 metres (and deeper), but they have no protection. Industrial salmon farming, climate change and pollution all threaten their survival, explains Ingrid Espinoza, Conservation Director of Rewilding Chile and co-author of the research.<\/p><p>Currently, 57 salmon aquaculture licenses are granted within the national reserve, and a further 132 new concessions are pending. If the later licences are granted, the consequences would be catastrophic for biodiversity, says Espinoz. <\/p><p>&#8220;The results of this study clearly demonstrate the presence of singular and unique ecosystems in the area. We need to implement management plans and strict protections to ensure their long-term survival.&#8221;<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-dive-in-red-hydrocorals-in-pictures\">Dive in: red
