Shipworms aren\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=worms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worms<\/a> \u2013\u00a0they are a group of bivalve molluscs related to clams and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-european-native-oysters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oysters<\/a>, but they have an unusual lifestyle for marine invertebrates. They mostly eat wood and they don\u2019t live in a shell. They have actually modified their shell into a structure that rasps wood into small fragments they can then consume.\u00a0<\/p><p>They also have an historical claim to fame \u2013\u00a0shipworms played an important role in the huge losses suffered by the Spanish Armada in 1588. Historians agree that one of the reasons so many ships were wrecked off the coasts of Scotland and Ireland after they were defeated by the British was because they were in poor condition as a result of all the holes inflicted upon them by burrowing worms.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Historians agree that shipworms played an important role in the losses suffered by the Spanish Armada in 1588. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Very few animals can eat trees \u2013\u00a0termites are another \u2013\u00a0and those that do usually have specialist microbes in their guts that do the essential job of breaking down the lignin, which is the really tough component of wood.<\/p><p>But there was no evidence of specialist bacteria in a shipworm\u2019s gut. \u201cThe shipworm\u2019s digestive tract has long thought to be virtually sterile,\u201d says Barry Goodell, a recently retired professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a co-author on a new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0964830524000878\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a>\u00a0that has revealed the secret of its success.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1414\" height=\"2121\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/06\/Shipworm-illustration.jpg\" alt=\"Shipworm\" class=\"wp-image-102699\" style=\"width:840px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The shipworm (Teredo navalis) is a species of a marine mollusc. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>After many years of fruitless investigation, a team from UMass and colleagues from other universities took a look at tiny sub-organ of the gut called the typhlosole, and there they found bacteria that can produce enzymes with the ability to break down wood.<\/p><p>Apart from the benefit of solving a salty puzzle, the discovery could be of interest to biotech companies looking for new ways to digest materials that are difficult to break down. Previous symbiotic organisms found within shipworms have had anti-parasitic antibodies, so could the same be true of these newly discovered ones?<\/p><p>A huge quantity of wood ends up in the world\u2019s oceans every year \u2013\u00a0mangroves alone are estimated to account of nine gigatons of plant biomass, and 70 per cent of mangroves are digested by shipworms.
