At 43 billion base pairs, it is 14 times larger than that of humans. But it has significantly more mobile genetic elements, so-called transposons. “These elements can be seen as a kind of computer viruses. They multiply on their own, but have no function. As a scientist, one is surprised that the lungfish’s ‘genetic hard drive’ has not long since crashed in view of the high number of transposons”, says Manfred Schartl.

[1
["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain.jpg",2121,1414,false
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-150x150.jpg",150,150,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-300x200.jpg",300,200,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-768x512.jpg",768,512,true
https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-1024x683.jpg",800,534,true],"1536x1536":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-1536x1024.jpg",1536,1024,true],"2048x2048":["https://c01.purpledshub.com/uploads/sites/44/2024/06/what-is-a-genome-why-are-they-important-experts-from-kew-gardens-explain-2048x1365.jpg",2048,1365,true
