Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-joro-spiders\">What are Joro spiders?<\/h2><p>The Joro spider (<em>Trichonephila clavate<\/em>) is a large-bodied orbweaver native to east Asia. Females usually have a bright yellow abdomen and yellow-banded legs, while males are a non-descript brown colour.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The female Joro spider is more than four times the size of the male. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-big-are-joro-spiders\">How big are Joro spiders?<\/h2><p>The body of a female Joro spider female measures 2.8cm long, with legs stretching another 3cm or so. Male Joros are less than a quarter of that size.\u00a0<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-spiders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">14 incredible spider facts you probably didn&#8217;t know<\/a><\/li><\/ul><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-joro-spiders-bite-and-are-they-poisonous\">Do Joro spiders bite and are they poisonous?<\/h2><p>They do not readily bite, being one of the shyest species of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=spider\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spider<\/a>. Joro venom is used for subduing small insects. Bites, if they happen, are not dangerous to humans, and less painful than a bee sting.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-joro-spider-webs-like\">What are Joro spider webs like?<\/h2><p>Joros are orbweavers, building spiral, wheel-shaped webs. Joro webs are golden and extremely strong \u2013 a citizen scientist in the US observed a cardinal perched on a Joro web, feeding off the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/what-are-insects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insects<\/a> trapped within it.\u00a0<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-joro-spiders-eat\">What do Joro spiders eat?<\/h2><p>Joro spiders are known to prey on cockroaches, beetles, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/common-wasp-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wasps<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/bee-vs-wasp-whats-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bees<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=butterflies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">butterflies<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/insects-invertebrates\/dragonfly-and-damselfly-guide-common-species-in-britain-where-to-find-and-how-to-identify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dragonflies<\/a>, grasshoppers and other spiders.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/06\/Joro-spider-web.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Joro spiders eat other invertebrates, such as cockroaches, beetles and bees. Their range includes Japan, the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, China, Myanmar and parts of the Himalayas.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-joro-spiders-in-the-us\">Joro spiders in the US<\/h2><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/joro-spider-spread-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joro is thought to have been introduced to the US state of Georgia in around 2010<\/a>. Though the exact route is uncertain, scientists hypothesise that it arrived in\u00a0a shipping container, as is common for invasive insect species.
