{"id":39741,"date":"2024-07-03T17:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-07-03T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/21fed266-5f17-401b-832f-36470a1af25b"},"modified":"2024-07-03T18:27:28","modified_gmt":"2024-07-03T16:27:28","slug":"the-whole-front-of-the-mouth-is-just-giant-teeth-prehistoric-swamp-monster-with-toilet-seat-head-dug-up-in-namibia","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/the-whole-front-of-the-mouth-is-just-giant-teeth-prehistoric-swamp-monster-with-toilet-seat-head-dug-up-in-namibia\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;The whole front of the mouth is just giant teeth.&#8221; Prehistoric swamp monster with toilet-seat head dug up in Namibia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The remains of the giant salamander-like creature were found on the Skeleton Coast. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Darren Naish\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 03 July 2024 at 15:00 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>A giant, toothy, salamander-like swimmer from ancient Namibia sheds light on evolution in the cool south, long before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=dinosaurs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dinosaurs<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p><p>Described in\u00a0<em>Nature<\/em>\u00a0by Claudia Marsicano of the University of Buenos Aires, Jason Pardo of the Field Museum in Chicago, and a team of colleagues, the new animal is an unusually large \u2018stem-tetrapod\u2019.<\/p><p>Marsicano and colleagues have named it\u00a0<em>Gaiasia jennyae<\/em>, honouring the Namibian Gai-As Formation \u2013 the rock unit that yielded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fossils-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fossil<\/a> \u2013 as well as Professor Jenny Clack of Cambridge University, a pioneer in stem-tetrapod studies who died in 2020.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The fossil was found on the Skeleton Coast in Namibia\/Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/dinosaurs\/prehistoric-animals\">10 prehistoric mega-species that ruled before the dinosaurs<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>When alive,\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0would have looked vaguely like a cross between a big salamander and a moray eel. It was huge for animals of its sort, probably approached four metres in length, and was entirely aquatic.<\/p><p>Its body was long and flexible, and it likely had a deep tail fin like that of a gigantic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/lizard-vs-newt-whats-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">newt<\/a>. Its limbs are unknown, but the team suspect that these were tiny, and possibly absent altogether. Credit: C. Marsicano<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Big, tusk-like fangs lined the edges of its jaws. \u201cAfter examining the skull,\u00a0the structure of the front caught my attention. It\u00a0was the only clearly visible part at that time, and it showed interlocking large fangs, creating a unique bite for early tetrapods\u201d, Marsicano recalled after first seeing the fossil in the field. These fangs were used to subdue prey animals \u2013 crustaceans, fishes and smaller tetrapods \u2013 after they were engulfed.\u00a0<\/p><p>There are no indications that\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0was built for pursuit or sustained swimming, so it was probably an ambush predator that lunged from cover or the lakebed. Rapid opening of its jaws would have created suction that pulled prey into the mouth.<\/p><p><em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0is not an archaic member of any group alive today but is instead outside the group that includes all living tetrapods, the animal group that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">amphibians<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reptiles<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">birds<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mammals<\/a>. In currently preferred terminology, a group of organisms that includes both living and fossil species has a \u2018crown\u2019 \u2013 the part of the family tree where all the branches include living species \u2013 and a \u2018stem\u2019, this being the part outside the crown, where all branches are extinct.\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0is outside the tetrapod crown, hence its placement as a \u2018stem-tetrapod\u2019.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1942\" height=\"2560\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Artists-rendering-of-Gaiasia-jennyae-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Artists rendering of Gaiasia jennyae\" class=\"wp-image-104015\" style=\"width:874px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;It has these huge fangs,&#8221; says Pardo, &#8220;the whole front of the mouth is just giant teeth.&#8221; Credit: Gabriel Lio<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The real surprise about\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0is when and where it lived. Stem-tetrapods of its sort were mostly animals of the first half of the Carboniferous, the so-called \u2018coal age\u2019 that lasted from 359 to 299 million years ago.\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0is from the early part of the Permian, the geological age that followed the Carboniferous, and it proves that animals of its sort persisted for about 40 million years longer than previously thought.<\/p><p>The majority of stem-tetrapods come from places that were close to the equator when they were alive. When\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u00a0was alive, Namibia was cool, even seasonally cold. Experts had previously thought that stem-tetrapods were absent from such places during the early part of the Permian, but this was clearly not so.<\/p><p>Were giant stem-tetrapods widespread across high, southern latitudes during the Permian? \u201cAnything is possible\u201d, Pardo said via email, \u201cbut we should expect more surprises like\u00a0<em>Gaiasia<\/em>\u201d.<\/p><p><em>Main image credit: Roger M.H.
