Credit: WTML<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/eagle-vs-osprey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White-tailed eagle vs osprey: what&#8217;s the difference?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>\u201cWe became aware that there was an opportunity for the chicks to go into a translocation programme reintroducing ospreys to the Valencia region in Spain,\u201d says George Anderson, a spokesperson from Woodland Trust Scotland. <\/p><p>\u201cIt will contribute to an excellent conservation initiative expanding the range of the species to make it more resilient in the future.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Loch-Arkaig-osprey-webcam.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Loch-Arkaig-osprey-webcam-1.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Loch Arkaig osprey webcam: a gale nearly blows the two chicks out of the nest. Credit: Woodland Trust Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Although there is no guarantee that the chicks will survive, their chances are greater in this reintroduction project than being left on the nest where they would likely die.\u00a0<\/p><p>The male osprey Louis and his mate Dorcha hatched three chicks this week, and two have survived to date. Male ospreys <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/your-60-second-guide-to-osprey-fishing-behaviour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bring back fish<\/a> for the whole family during the breeding season. The uncommon decision for the charity to step in came after Louis was observed bringing back just one or no fish each day to the nest.\u00a0<\/p><p>In previous years at this time of year, he has been an excellent provider and normally brings back four or five fish each day \u2013 even setting a record of nine fish in one day. The poor weather this year may be a factor in Louis\u2019 reduced performance, and other osprey nests are having a poor year.<\/p><p>\u201cBut we think there is something not right about Louis. It could be his age, or he might be ill. Credit: Woodland Trust Scotland<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The two chicks were given to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roydennis.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roy Dennis Wildlife Foundation<\/a>, who are involved with the reintroduction project and are experts in translocating raptors.\u00a0<\/p><p>Louis has successfully raised chicks before. He has been known to nature lovers around the UK \u2013 and the world \u2013 since his first appearance on the Woodland Trust Scotland\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/trees-woods-and-wildlife\/osprey-cam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">live nest camera<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.woodlandtrust.org.uk\/visiting-woods\/woods\/loch-arkaig-pine-forest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Loch Arkaig Pine Forest<\/a> in 2017, mating with a female called Alia until 2020.
