Credit: Alexander Braczkowski<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Previous reported swims by African <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-lions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lions<\/a> have ranged from a few metres to a couple of hundred metres, some of which resulted in deaths by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/crocodile-vs-alligator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">crocodile<\/a> attacks. The researchers, who worked under the supervision of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ugandawildlife.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Uganda Wildlife Authority<\/a>, believe that the lion brothers&#8217; 1.5km swim across the Kazinga Channel is a record-breaker.<\/p><p>\u201cHis swim, across a channel filled with high densities of hippos and crocodiles, is a record-breaker and is a truly amazing show of resilience in the face of such risk,\u201d said\u00a0Braczkowski, who has been running a long-term study of African lions and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/apex-predators-what-they-are\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">predators<\/a> in Queen Elizabeth and several other Ugandan National Parks.<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>His swim, across a channel filled with high densities of hippos and crocodiles, is a record-breaker and is a truly amazing show of resilience in the face of such risk.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>\u201cI\u2019d bet all my belongings that we are looking at Africa\u2019s most resilient lion: he has been gored by a buffalo, his family was poisoned for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/lions-poached-body-parts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lion body part trade<\/a>, he was caught in a poacher\u2019s snare, and finally lost his leg in another attempted poaching incident where he was caught in a steel trap.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThe fact that he and his brother Tibu have managed to survive as long as they have in a national park that has experienced significant human pressures and high poaching rates is a feat in itself \u2013 our science has shown this population has nearly halved in just 5 years.&#8221;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/First-crossing-attempt-of-Kazinga-Channel-1.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jacob and Tibu enter the Kazinga Channel. Credit Alexander Braczkowski<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The researchers are trying to figure out why Jacob and Tibu risked the dangerous 1.5km-long night swim.\u00a0<\/p><p>&#8220;It\u2019s likely the brothers were looking for females,\u201d Dr Braczkowski explained.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cCompetition for lionesses in the park is fierce and they lost a fight for female affection in the hours leading up to the swim, so it\u2019s likely the duo mounted the risky journey to get to the females on the other side of the channel.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThere is a small connecting bridge to the other side but the presence of people was probably a deterrent for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Final-crossing-of-Kazinga-Channel-mov-image.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Final-Crossing-of-Kazinga-Channel-Credit-Alexander-Braczkowski.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The lion brothers epic swim across the Kazinga Channel was 1.5km long.
