Its body is also colourful \u2013 vivid green on top, with yellow and blue stripes along its sides, a pale belly, and red feet. The species is found in the forests of Central America, and northwestern Colombia in South America.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/wirdest-frogss\">The weirdest frogs, from ultrasonic screamers to the bizarrely hairy. Weighing four times as much as a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/grey-squirrel-facts\">grey squirrel<\/a>\u00a0and much bigger than the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-red-squirrels\">red squirrel<\/a>, this robust rodent is about the size of a domestic cat. But it\u2019s not the Malabar giant\u2019s size that turns heads and drops jaws, but rather its colour scheme &#8211; and it&#8217;s quite easy to see how it earn&#8217;t its other name &#8211; the r<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/rainbow-squirrel\">ainbow squirrel<\/a>.<\/p><p>Risso&#8217;s dolphin<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1067\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/04\/Risso-Dolphin-GettyImages-153605329-6dc4826.jpg\" alt=\"Close-up of risso's dolphin jumping in sea.\" class=\"wp-image-61839\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/rissos-dolphin-guide\">risso&#8217;s,dolphin<\/a>, which clock in at up to 4m in length and up to 500kg in weight, is one of the world&#8217;s biggest dolphins. They have blunt heads with an indistinct beak and a V-shaped cleft at the front, and a tall dorsal fin. There is a huge variation in colour, according to, among other things, age and region.<\/p><p>Rattlesnake<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/rattle-snake.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty video<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>No one wants to accidentally step on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/venomous-vs-poisonous\">venomous<\/a> rattlesnake. The snake doesn\u2019t like it much either. Happily for all concerned, as it grows, a rattlesnake accumulates small hollow segments of each shed skin at the tip of its tail, which clank together menacingly when shaken. The result is a warning signal as archetypal as a wasp\u2019s black-and-yellow stripes. Increasing the frequency of the rattle adds to the sense of urgency as danger approaches.<\/p><p>Red panda<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5184\" height=\"3456\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1130384417-c635a0a.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-65819\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The red panda is not related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/giant-pandas-facts\">giant panda<\/a>, and is in the Ailuridae family, alongside the skunks (Mephitidae), raccoons (Procyonidae) and mustelids (Mustelidae). However, it exhibits similar behaviour, eating predominantly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/plant-facts\/whats-the-fastest-growing-plant\">bamboo<\/a>.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/do-pandas-only-eat-bamboo\">Do pandas only eat bamboo?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Reindeer<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2120\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/11\/A-reindeer.jpg\" alt=\"A reindeer\" class=\"wp-image-92416\"\/><\/figure><p>Reindeer are the same species as caribour deer (<em>rangifer tarandus<\/em>). However, the distinction between the two variations is that caribou live in North America, and reindeer live in Northern Europe and Asia. Mainly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/12-things-you-never-knew-about-reindeer\">reindeer<\/a> are domesticated or semi-domesticated, while caribou are wild, migratory mammals.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/reindeer-vs-deer-whats-the-difference\">Reindeer vs deer: what&#8217;s the difference between a reindeer and a deer?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p><strong>Raccoon<\/strong><\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2053\" height=\"1460\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/08\/raccoon-55669bb.jpg?fit=1024,1024\" alt=\"Raccoon\" class=\"wp-image-78763\"\/><\/figure><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/raccoon-facts\">common raccoon<\/a> is North America&#8217;s most numerous mammal and is famed as a nuisance! It belongs to the Procyonidae family and its nearest relatives includes the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/coati-guide-facts\/\">coati<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>Before the urbanisation of North America, raccoons scampered mainly through deciduous woodland. With much of their former habitat gone, these excellent climbers began denning in attics instead, even in city centres. In 2018, one enterprising raccoon went viral by scaling a 25-storey Minnesota high-rise. After its 20-hour ascent, streamed live, the animal was rescued on the roof.<\/p><p>Redstart<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"3640\" height=\"2410\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2021\/04\/Redstart.-GettyImages-1061398586-337c99a.jpg\" alt=\"A male redstart singing as part of the dawn chorus. \u00a9 Avalon\/Universal Images Group\/Getty\" class=\"wp-image-44140\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Getty images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Common redstarts are colourful avian summer visitors to the UK. Their scientific name is\u00a0<em>Phoenicurus phoenicurus<\/em>, which is an example of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/tautonyms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tautonym<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/common-redstart-guide\">Redstarts<\/a> are about 14cm in length, with a wingspan of between 20-24cm. they usually weigh between 11-19g.<\/p><p>Rabbit<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5256\" height=\"3493\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2022\/02\/RabbitsUKMike-PowlesGettyImages-126544437-261c233.jpg\" alt=\"Rabbits live in groups.
