Here&#8217;s why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Only six spade-toothed whales have ever been documented, making the find particularly significant. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 17 July 2024 at 06:38 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Marine mammal experts were astounded to find the world\u2019s rarest whale washed up on a beach near Taieri Mouth, New Zealand. <\/strong><\/p><p>Experts from the country\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.doc.govt.nz\/news\/media-releases\/2024-media-releases\/worlds-rarest-whale-washes-ashore-in-otago\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Conservation<\/a>\u00a0(DOC) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tepapa.govt.nz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Te Papa<\/a> believe the five-metre-long male was a spade-toothed whale (<em>Mesoplodon traversii<\/em>). This species is so rare that it has never been seen alive and very little is known about it.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cSpade-toothed whales are one of the most poorly known large mammalian species of modern times,&#8221; says DOC Coastal Otago Operations Manager Gabe Davies.<\/p><p>&#8220;Since the 1800s, only six samples have ever been documented worldwide, and all but one of these was from New Zealand. But experts are carefully considering their next steps, taking into account the rarity of the species and the importance of whales in M\u0101ori culture \u2013 these animals are considered taoka, or treasured.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cIt is important to ensure appropriate respect for this taoka is shown through the shared journey of learning, applying m\u0101tauraka M\u0101ori as we discover more about this rare species,\u201d says\u00a0Te R\u016bnanga \u014d \u014ctakou\u00a0chair Nadia Wesley-Smith. M\u0101tauraka M\u0101ori is the traditional\u00a0wisdom\u00a0that has been passed down from the ancestors for many years.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Spade-toothed-whale-New-Zealand.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The spade-toothed whale has been transported to a cold storage unit so it can be preserved until a decision is made about the next steps. The species was first described in 1874 from a lower jaw and two teeth found on Pitt Island, R\u0113kohu (Chatham Islands). <\/p><p>The skeletons of two other spade-toothed whales found on Whak\u0101ri\/White Island and Robinson Crusoe Island (Chile) were used with this first specimen to confirm this was a new species. More recently, two more whales that were found dead in Bay of Plenty (2010) and north of Gisborne (2017) allowed scientists to confirm the species\u2019 colour pattern for the first time.\u00a0<\/p><p>Being able to examine this new specimen could give researchers a wealth of new information about this little-known species.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>For now, the animal is in cold storage so it can be preserved until a decision is made about the best next steps. Genetic testing is underway at the University of Auckland to confirm that the individual is indeed a spade-toothed whale.
