Slither in with this new livestream video&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Installed at a large snake den in Colorado, the camera has already captured predator attacks, dare-devil rodents and some ingenious drinking behaviour. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Daniel Graham\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 17 July 2024 at 09:03 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Rattlesnake researchers have installed a new livestream camera at a large snake den in Colorado.<\/strong><\/p><p>The livestream is part of <a href=\"https:\/\/rattlecam.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Project RattleCam<\/a>, a citizen science project set up to allow experts to study rattlesnakes without disturbing them.<\/p><p>Offering members of the public an intimate view of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">snakes<\/a> behaving naturally can help to &#8220;combat the biased imagery we see on television shows of rattling, defensive and stressed snakes interacting with people who are provoking them,&#8221; says project leader and rattlesnake expert Emily Taylor.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A glimpse of the rattlesnake mega-den in Colorado. Credit: Cal Poly<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/worlds-longest-snake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is the longest snake in the world?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/reptiles\/smallest-snake-in-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What&#8217;s the smallest snake in the world?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The high-tech, solar-powered camera system is set up at a den in a remote, undisclosed location on private land in northern Colorado. The site&#8217;s intricate geological features provide lots of shelter for the snakes, making it perfect for a &#8216;mega-den&#8217;.<\/p><p><a href=\"http:\/\/rattlecam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RattleCam<\/a> has already caught some exciting moments, according to observations reported on the <a href=\"https:\/\/tinyurl.com\/38kvzye2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">YouTube live chat<\/a>, including predators visiting the den attempting to attack the rattlesnakes and the mass emergence of thirsty snakes to drink raindrops collected on their coiled bodies. Some public viewers have even seen rodents scurrying by the sleeping snakes.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Colorado Rattlecam Livestream\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0Tj8HNFR4zg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>One of the main highlights at the moment is the dozens of pregnant rattlesnakes, which can be seen basking in the den. Later this summer you&#8217;ll be able to watch them rearing their tiny pups, which should start being born in August. They&#8217;ll stay at the den with their mothers until the male snakes return in September from their summer hunting grounds ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/what-is-hibernation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hibernation<\/a>, says Taylor, who is keen to correct the biased imagery we see on television of &#8220;rattling, defensive and stressed snakes interacting with people who are provoking them.\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cWe hope to eventually install cameras on snake aggregations (group gathering) all over the world to help us better understand the behaviours of these complex, social animals,\u201d Taylor adds.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/A-closeup-of-a-rattler-captured-in-Colorado-in-June-on-the-Project-RattleCam-camera.jpg\" alt=\"Project RattleCam\" class=\"wp-image-105317\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A closeup of a rattler captured on the Project RattleCam camera in June.
