{"id":40451,"date":"2024-07-25T15:36:48","date_gmt":"2024-07-25T13:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/63dc2b3c-29d1-42b5-b212-88b30dd7d01f"},"modified":"2024-07-25T16:27:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T14:27:30","slug":"electric-butterflies-create-a-charge-so-strong-they-can-pull-pollen-through-the-air-like-telekinetic-superheroes","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/electric-butterflies-create-a-charge-so-strong-they-can-pull-pollen-through-the-air-like-telekinetic-superheroes\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Electric butterflies&#8217; create a charge so strong they can pull pollen through the air like telekinetic superheroes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Butterflies and moths create so much static electricity when they fly that pollen grains can be moved, as if by magic, through the air towards them, finds new study. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Daniel Graham\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Thursday, 25 July 2024 at 13:36 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>A new study has revealed that the electrostatic field created by butterflies and moths in flight allows them to attract pollen grains from flowers <strong>across air gaps<\/strong> up to several centimetres wide.<\/strong><\/p><p>Researchers from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">University of Bristol<\/a> also observed that the amount of static electricity carried by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=butterflies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">butterflies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/search?phrase=moths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">moths<\/a> varies from species to species depending on variations in their ecology, such as the type of flowers they visit, whether the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/are-insects-more-active-in-the-day-or-night\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">insects fly at day or night<\/a>, and the habitat in which they live. <\/p><p>The new findings, <a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsif.2024.0156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">published<\/a> in the\u00a0<em>Journal of the Royal Society Interface,\u00a0<\/em>suggest that this electric field increases their efficiency and effectiveness as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/plant-facts\/pollination-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pollinators<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Butterflies and moths collect so much static electricity in flight that pollen grains can be pulled across air gaps of several millimetres or even centimetres. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/whats-the-worlds-biggest-butterfly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What\u2019s the world\u2019s biggest butterfly?<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/butterfly-vs-moth-whats-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Butterfly vs moth: what&#8217;s the difference?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Scientists involved in the research say they already knew that flower-visiting animals, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/bee-vs-wasp-whats-the-difference\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bees<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/facts-about-hummingbirds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hummingbirds<\/a> might use static electricity to collect pollen. However, they didn&#8217;t know whether this electrostatic attraction applied to a wider array of equally important pollinators, such as butterflies and moths.<\/p><p>&#8220;We set out to test this idea,&#8221; says lead author\u00a0Dr Sam England\u00a0from Bristol\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.ac.uk\/biology\/\">School of Biological Sciences<\/a>, &#8220;and see if butterflies and moths also accumulate charge, and if so, whether this charge is enough to attract pollen from flowers onto their bodies.\u201d<\/p><p>The research examined 269 butterflies and moths across 11 species, native to five continents, each occupying various ecological niches. This allowed them to compare and determine if these ecological variables were linked to their charge, which in turn could reveal whether static charging could be influenced by evolution.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve discovered that butterflies and moths accumulate so much static electricity when flying, that pollen is literally pulled through the air towards them as they approach a flower,&#8221; explains Dr England.<\/p><p>\u201cThis means that they don\u2019t even need to touch flowers in order to pollinate them, making them very good at their jobs as pollinators, and highlighting just how important they might be to the functioning of our flowery ecosystems.&#8221;<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1800\" height=\"1200\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/07\/Butterfly-and-flower.jpg\" alt=\"Butterfly flying towards flower\" class=\"wp-image-106023\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The movement of pollen from the flowers to butterflies or moths means they don\u2019t need to touch plants in order to pollinate them. Credit: Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>So, what&#8217;s the significance of these findings in the wider context?<\/p><p>\u201cBy establishing electrostatic charging as a trait upon which evolution can act,&#8221; says Dr England, &#8220;it opens up a great deal of questions about how and why natural selection might lead to animals benefiting or suffering from the amount of static electricity that they accumulate.&#8221;<\/p><p>In terms of practical applications, the scientists say there is the possibility for technologies to artificially increase the electrostatic charges or pollinators or pollen, all of which could improve pollination rates in natural and agricultural settings.<\/p><p>\u201cFor me personally, I would love to do a wider survey of as many different species of animal as possible, see how much static electricity they accumulate, and then look for any correlations with their ecology and lifestyle,&#8221; concludes Dr England. &#8220;Then we can really begin to understand how evolution and static electricity interact!\u201d<\/p><p>Find out more about the study: &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rsif.2024.0156\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Electrostatic pollination by butterflies and moths<\/a>\u2019 by Sam J.
