There are over 100,000 species, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/new-species-discovered-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new species<\/a> being regularly described. The majority of arachnid species are spiders.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-s-the-difference-between-arachnids-and-insects\">What&#8217;s the difference between arachnids and insects?<\/h2><p>Arachnids have eight legs in four pairs, although in some species the front pair of legs have adapted to be used in a different function and in some other species, other appendages have grown large enough to be mistaken for legs.<\/p><p>In contrast, i<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/what-are-insects\">nsects<\/a> have six legs in three pairs. Usually this refers to spider species in the Pholcidae family, particularly the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/facts-about-pholcid-spider\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cellar spider<\/a> \u2013 the species that hangs out on ceilings and vibrates dizzyingly fast if touched.<\/p><p>However, the name \u2018daddy long-legs\u2019 is also sometimes used to refer to craneflies (not arachnids) or harvestmen (arachnids that are often confused with spiders).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-some-examples-of-arachnids\">Some examples of arachnids:<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-spiders-araneae-order\">Spiders (Araneae order)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/02\/Goliath-bird-eating-spider.-GettyImages-1440036282-2215cea.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74720\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A Goliath bird-eating spider (Theraphosa blondi) in French Guiana. \u00a9 Wirestock\/Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Spiders are the most familiar arachnids to the majority of us, and are the largest order of arachnids with other 50,000 described species. All harvestmen have spindly legs, and can be distinguished from spiders by having fused body regions and a single pair of eyes in the cephalothorax. Harvestmen cannot make silk or webs. Over 2,500 species have been described, many of which live in deserts.<\/p><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/deadliest-scorpion\">What\u2019s the most venomous scorpion in the world? And just how deadly is it?<\/a><\/li><\/ul><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ultraviolet Scorpion Captures Prey | Wonders of Life with Brian Cox | BBC Earth\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vVWk-oz4Ffs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The UK lacks any native scorpion species, but there is one non-native species has managed to make itself at home in the on the Isle of Sheppey in Kent \u2013 the yellow-tailed scorpion (<i>Tetratrichobothrius flavicaudis<\/i>). <\/p><p>Measuring up to 45cm in length, this mostly-black scorpion species (with yellow-brown legs and tail) is thought to have arrived in the 1800s in shipments of Italian masonry.<\/p><p>The population is believed to be the northernmost population of wild scorpions outside of the Americas. It is said to rarely use its sting and it has only mild venom, said to be less painful to a human than a<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/bee-and-wasp-stings-what-they-are-why-they-hurt-and-how-to-treat-a-sting\/\"> bee sting.<\/a><\/strong><\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-pseudoscorpions-pseudoscorpiones-order\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/pseudoscorpions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pseudoscorpions<\/a> (Pseudoscorpiones order)<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-landscape_thumbnail\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/02\/Psuedoscorpion.-GettyImages-1378826958-8df6b42.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-74722\" title=\"\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A pseudoscorpion on tree bark. \u00a9 Tomasz Klejdysz\/Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p class=\"BODYTEXTINDENTTEXT\">Much smaller than scorpions, pseudoscorpions do have two long pincers, but lack the stinging tail. They are also known as false scorpions or book scorpions. There are 27 species of pseudoscorpions in the UK, and around 12 of these are considered to be quite common.<\/p><p class=\"BODYTEXTINDENTTEXT\">However, it can be quite hard to see a pseudoscorpion unless you\u2019re specifically looking for one as UK species only measure between 2-8mm.
