Researchers in Queensland have been observing the critically endangered scalloped hammerheads for several months. <\/p>

Scientists in Australia have shared incredible footage of baby hammerhead sharks aggregating off the coast of Queensland.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

Scalloped hammerheads (Sphyrna lewini<\/em>) \u201cwere seen [for the] first time last year at Burleigh Heads but only for a few weeks,\u201d says\u00a0Olaf Meynecke,<\/a>\u00a0research fellow at Griffith University. <\/p>

They reappeared in March this year but \u201cin higher numbers with different age classes.\u201d<\/p>

From Burleigh Heads, they moved 20km south to a small nearshore reef until June. <\/p>
\u201cThe area has never documented so many baby scalloped hammerheads for several months,\u201d says Meynecke, who has been lucky enough to see the\u00a0 critically endangered\u00a0sharks<\/a> grow during this time.<\/p>

Humans pose a huge threat to these endangered animals.\u00a0\u201cOf course, the biggest threat is fishing. Australia still allows several tons per year to be caught. Then illegal fishing and accidental bycatches,\u201d says Meynecke. <\/p>
But he reminds people\u00a0to give the sharks plenty of space. \u201cPeople have shown great interest in the Gold Coast sometimes resulting in the sharks being chased.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>
