So many different, and complex, threats are impacting much of our flora and fauna, with many species becoming more at risk every year \u2013 whether they live in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/desert-animals\">deserts<\/a>, grasslands, jungles or countryside.<\/p><p>The threats facing the world\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-polar-bears\">polar bears<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-tigers\">tigers<\/a>,\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-rhinos\">rhinos<\/a> are common knowledge, but here, Nida Al-Fulaij from <a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/\">People\u2019s Trust for Endangered Species<\/a> and the experts from <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.whales.org\/\">Whale and Dolphin Conservation<\/a>, highlights 11 of the rarest animals in the world that you may not have come across before. <\/p><p>These species are just as important as the iconic ones,\u00a0and\u00a0range\u00a0from\u00a0one of the world\u2019s rarest snakes\u00a0to Siamese crocodiles that are sadly\u00a0now absent from 99% of\u00a0their\u00a0former range.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rarest-animals-in-the-world\">Rarest animals in the world<\/h2><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Black and chestnut eagle<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: thibaudaronson, CC BY-SA 4.0 https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0, via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Eagles, some\u00a0of the world\u2019s most iconic species, are mostly found in Eurasia and Africa.\u00a0Only a\u00a0handful of species live in the Americas, including the rare\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/peregrinefund.org\/explore-raptors-species\/eagles\/black-and-chestnut-eagle\">black and chestnut eagle<\/a>, which has fewer than\u00a0250 adults remaining in the wild <\/p><p>One of the largest raptors\u00a0of\u00a0the Andes, these kings of the air have a wingspan of almost two metres.\u00a0Living\u00a0high\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0montane\u00a0forests from Colombia to Argentina, these birds\u00a0hunt medium-sized mammals such as\u00a0squirrels,\u00a0opossums\u00a0and porcupines, as well as birds.\u00a0<\/p><p>But as communities\u00a0expand in the\u00a0more remote\u00a0regions, conflict arises as the eagles sometimes\u00a0take chickens, a loss the local farmers cannot afford.\u00a0Conflict resolution measures are underway to ensure the birds can live in harmony alongside the local villagers.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>El Rincon stream frogs<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1739\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/El-Rincon-stream-Frog-Federico-Pablo-Kacoliris.-jpg-2-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93324\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Pablo Kacoliris\/PTES<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Living at the southern\u00a0tip of South America,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservationleadershipprogramme.org\/project\/recovering-the-critically-endangered-el-rincon-stream-frog-in-patagonia-argentina\/\">El Rincon stream frogs<\/a>\u00a0are found in one location on\u00a0a single plateau in Argentinian Patagonia.\u00a0These frogs survive the frigid cold winters by spending their lives in warm thermal streams.\u00a0Listed as Critically Endangered, the frogs have been\u00a0at risk from invasive, aggressive rainbow trout\u00a0and habitat loss as cattle encroach into their habitat. Fish barriers, fencing and\u00a0reintroduction efforts are\u00a0helping this endemic\u00a0amphibian return to local streams where they\u2019d become extinct.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Northern river terrapins<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1418\" height=\"796\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Northern-river-terrapins.jpeg\" alt=\"Northern river terrapins\" class=\"wp-image-93149\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit; Philbert Charles Berjeau, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/grants\/worldwide-projects\/lost-and-found-restoring-rare-terrapins-in-northern-india\/\">Northern river terrapins<\/a>\u00a0(<em>Batagur\u00a0baska<\/em>)\u00a0are one of the most endangered freshwater turtles in the world.\u00a0Once widespread throughout the mangrove swamps, rivers and\u00a0estuaries\u00a0of West Bengal and Odisha in India, their numbers plummeted due to over collection of adults and eggs for food, as well as sand mining and pollution. An emergency search in 2008 found just 12 individuals surviving in\u00a0the forests of West Bengal. These terrapins have formed the core of a captive breeding population, which\u00a0has successfully returned\u00a0the first population into the wild, with plans to establish more.\u00a0<\/p><p\/><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dinagat<\/strong><strong>\u00a0moonrat<\/strong><\/h3><p>Many endemic species exist on small islands.\u00a0In the southern part of the Philippines,\u00a0Dinagat\u00a0Island is host to two particularly rare animals, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/grants\/worldwide-projects\/helping-moonrats-and-hairy-tailed-rats-survive-on-dinagat-island\/\">Dinagat\u00a0moonrat and the\u00a0Dinagat\u00a0hairy-tailed rat<\/a>. These small mammals are so rare that\u00a0we don\u2019t know how many survive on the\u00a0tiny island \u2013 and we can&#8217;t even source a picture.\u00a0Half of the island is threatened with mining so urgent\u00a0investigations\u00a0are underway to try and locate the remaining populations and put protection measures in place to ensure their habitat isn\u2019t lost.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Hirola antelope<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2124\" height=\"1412\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Hirola-antelope-is-one-of-the-rarest-animals-in-the-world.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93145\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Known as the world\u2019s most endangered antelope,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-hirola-antelope\">hirola<\/a>\u00a0number just a few hundred individuals in the wild.\u00a0Since the 1970s when an estimated 14,000 antelope roamed the grasslands of Kenya and Somalia, various catastrophes have reduced their numbers to just 600.\u00a0These shockingly low hirola numbers are predominantly a result of habitat loss \u2013 a decline in the grassland upon which they depend. These landscape changes have been associated with overgrazing, elephant extirpation, fire suppression and climate variability,\u00a0compounded by the fact that\u00a0the region\u00a0is\u00a0subject to\u00a0conflict and drought. Efforts are underway to\u00a0restore and protect\u00a0the\u00a0traditional\u00a0grasslands they depend on.<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Albany adders<\/strong><\/h2><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Herping South Africa Part 8 - Searching for the Albany adder (Bitis albanica)\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hCPxKowYudE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>South Africa is home to critically endangered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rainforesttrust.org\/urgent-projects\/rescue-south-africas-lost-snake-from-the-brink-of-extinction\/\">Albany adders,<\/a> a species of dwarf adder. With only 17 known records, this is one of the world\u2019s rarest snakes. Added to which, their only known location is under threat from opencast mining, wind turbine and road developments.\u00a0Emergency survey work is being carried out to try and locate and protect other populations.\u00a0The landowners\u00a0of the areas where the snakes are found are being asked to\u00a0enter\u00a0into\u00a0stewardship agreements with the South African conservation authorities\u00a0to secure long-term protection for the adders.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Roach\u2019s mouse-tailed dormouse<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Roachs-mouse-tailed-dormouse-Nedko-Nedyalkov-3-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93326\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Nedko Nedyalkov<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Despite\u00a0concerted\u00a0efforts to find other\u00a0populations, the only known locations\u00a0of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/discovermammals.org\/projects\/nest-boxes-for-mouse-tailed-dormouse\/\">Roach\u2019s mouse-tailed dormouse<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0in\u00a0south-western Bulgaria.\u00a0It\u2019s one of the\u00a0least-known\u00a0and rarest rodents in Europe. These dormice live in open and semi-open habitats with old trees and little agricultural activity, a habitat still very common in south-eastern Europe. But this habitat is increasingly under threat, either from being converted to\u00a0intensive agricultural land or, if left unfarmed, to enclosed forest.\u00a0Hibernating for at least six months\u00a0annually\u00a0means these animals are only active long enough to produce one litter of young each year.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bawean\u00a0warty pigs<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1945\" height=\"1462\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Bawean-pigs-Johanna-Rode-Margono-BEKI-Bawean-Endemik-Konservasi-Initiatif.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93327\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Johanna Rode-Margono<\/figcaption><\/figure><p><a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Indonesia-warty-pig-newsletter-2.pdf\">Bawean\u00a0warty pigs<\/a>,\u00a0found on the Indonesian island of\u00a0Bawean, may number just a few hundred.\u00a0Closely related to the Javan warty pig, they\u2019re\u00a0actually a\u00a0distinct species that\u00a0probably diverged about 160,000 years ago. Deforestation is a huge problem in Indonesia; on\u00a0Bawean\u00a0only\u00a010% of the original forest remains. As the\u00a0pigs\u00a0forage\u00a0outside the safety of the forest for food, they\u00a0come into conflict with people who see them as pests.\u00a0Work is progressing to reduce\u00a0crop raiding by the animals whilst promoting co-existence with the local communities.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Golden langurs<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"345\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2023\/12\/Golden-langur.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-93146\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Image credit: Amartyabag at English Wikipedia., CC BY-SA 2.5 https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/2.5, via Wikimedia Commons<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Considered one of the 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/the-worlds-25-most-endangered-primates\">most endangered primates<\/a> in the world,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/grants\/worldwide-projects\/helping-the-golden-langurs-of-the-forests-of-india\/\">golden langur<\/a>\u00a0numbers have dropped by as much as 60% in Bhutan.\u00a0The only other known population lives in Assam, northern India.\u00a0Their stark black hands and faces contrast sharply with their cream-coloured fur which glows gold under the sun.\u00a0With half-metre-long tails, these monkeys are perfectly adapted to life in the trees. But their forest homes are highly fragmented, which means roadkill is a huge threat.\u00a0Reforestation and the innovative use of wildlife friendly bridges are reconnecting previously isolated groups.\u00a0<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Siamese crocodiles<\/strong><\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Close Encounter with a Siamese Crocodile | Saving Planet Earth: Crocodiles | BBC Earth\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Y2y4OpzKIK4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen=\"\"\/><\/div><\/figure><p>The critically endangered\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ptes.org\/grants\/worldwide-projects\/siamese-crocodile-breeding-programme\/\">Siamese crocodile<\/a>\u00a0was once widespread throughout much of mainland Southeast Asia. It is now absent from 99% of its former range and the total number of mature Siamese crocodiles is thought to have declined to an estimated 250 in the wild.\u00a0The species was so rare, it was only thanks to a chance \u2018rediscovery\u2019 of some individuals in Cambodia\u2019s Cardamom Mountains that there\u2019s any conservation programme today at all. <\/p><p>That work continues in the same mountain range, where some 400,000 hectares have been protected to save the crocodiles. It remains one of the world\u2019s rarest\u00a0reptiles,\u00a0reduced to small populations due to habitat loss from the expansion of rice farming, continued poaching, accidental entanglement in fishing gear and the construction of hydroelectric dams.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Vaquita porpoise<\/h3><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1811\" height=\"890\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/02\/Vaquita-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-95079\"\/><\/figure><p>With just 10 remaining in the wild, the tiny vaquita needs a miracle to save it from extinction, say the experts at <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.whales.org\/\">Whale and Dolphin Conservation<\/a>.<\/p><p>Vaquitas are endemic (only found) in one small, 2,235km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0area in the north of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez), off Mexico.
