That huchen\u00a0make it this far in their life cycle cannot be taken for granted. In 1927, the last free-living bison in the Caucasus\u00a0was shot and the species was considered extinct inthe wild in Europe.\u00a0With the help of a small group of animals from zoological gardens and\u00a0private owners, the European bison was saved from extinction. As of\u00a02023, around 7,200 individuals exist in Europe. The samples are then sent to Swansea University for propagation\u00a0and transferred to the Dale coast in Pembrokeshire as part of the UK&#8217;s\u00a0largest seagrass reintroduction initiative with the aim of\u00a0establishing one\u00a0million plants. <\/p><p>Around the world, seagrass meadows have been lost due to\u00a0human impact\u00a0\u2013including water pollution, shipping and climate change\u00a0\u2013and it is essential that action be taken now to safeguard this important\u00a0habitat for the future. Seagrass, one of a small number of marine\u00a0flowering plant species, plays an extremely important role in marine\u00a0ecosystems as it absorbs large amounts of carbon from the atmosphere\u00a0and is both habitat and nursery for diverse marine animals, including\u00a0endangered (e.g., seahorses) and commercially important (e.g., cod and\u00a0saithe) species.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/staffan_widstrand_iberischer_luchs.jpg\" alt=\"Iberian lynx photos wins Rewilding Europe photo award 2024\" class=\"wp-image-111005\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Iberian lynx, winner\/Staffan Widstrand, Rewilding Europe<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>The photograph shows an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/facts-about-iberian-lynx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Iberian lynx<\/a> (<em>Lynx pardinus<\/em>) with a freshly\u00a0caught European rabbit (<em>Oryctolagus cuniculus<\/em>) in the Spanish Sierra de\u00a0And\u00fajar. The Iberian lynx joins a\u00a0small number of species making a\u00a0comeback in recent years. From a low of around 96 individuals worldwide\u00a0(restricted to Spain), the population has grown to at least 2000 and\u00a0expanded to Portugal. <\/p><p>Strict hunting regulations, a captive breeding\u00a0programme, reintroductions, and promotion of large rabbit populations\u00a0have all contributed to the lynx&#8217;s comeback. Wildlife crossings, particularly\u00a0in the form of tunnels under roads, have significantly reduced traffic-related kills.
