And they may have just found it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Researchers are using drones to try and understand more about the behaviour of great white sharks. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Daniel Graham\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 02 October 2024 at 08:17 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Researchers at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB<\/strong>)<strong> in California are using drones to help project when and where great white sharks show up near specific beaches.<\/strong><\/p><p>Forecasting what times of year, what times of day and what ocean conditions are more or less likely to attract sharks can help experts make informed decisions about shark conservation and beachgoer safety, according to a new report published in the\u00a0<em><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.int-res.com\/abstracts\/meps\/v744\/p101-114\/\">Marine Ecology Progress Series<\/a><\/u><\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Researcher readying the &#8216;SharkEye&#8217; drone for take-off\/Neil Nathan<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>\u201cPredicting when sharks will turn up is something of a holy grail in shark science,\u201d says\u00a0Douglas McCauley, a professor in UCSB and lead author of the study.<\/p><p>But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/great-white-shark-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">great white shark<\/a> movement is hard to predict, admits McCauley, who explains that there are many factors that dictate the whereabouts of sharks, such as their life stage, the behaviour of their food, oceanic conditions and long-term patterns associated with climate change.<\/p><p>Keen to find out more, McCauley and colleagues spent two years studying shark activity at Padaro Beach in Carpinteria, California. They used aerial drones to count the number of white sharks near the beach and then measured as many other features about the ocean as they could. <\/p><p>The study looked at temporal factors, such as the time of day and season, as well as physical characteristics, including swell and wave height, water visibility, and surface and seafloor temperatures. They also considered biological factors, such as the amount of plankton in the water.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Sharks-in-California.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Sharks-with-surfers.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Drone captures footage of sharks and surfers\/Neil Nathan<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Unlike previous shark-counting studies \u2013 such as divers recording them as they swim, sonar counts and marking them with tags \u2013\u00a0the drones offered the researchers regular and reliable counts using a pre-programmed, one-mile flight path just outside the surf line.<\/p><p>\u201cOne of the strengths of this method is that you can cover a lot of ground in these surveys, and because the sharks have no idea there is a drone overhead, they are easier to count,\u201d explains co-author\u00a0Neil Nathan, a project scientist at UCSB. <\/p><p>\u201cA disadvantage is that you can really only image the surface layer of the ocean.\u201d<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Great-white-shark.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Drones-counting-great-white-sharks-in-California.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Drone counts great white sharks and the depths they are swimming\/Neil Nathan<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>To offer a more comprehensive picture of shark population patterns, the researchers gathered additional data from tagging efforts and acoustic buoys from Professor Chris Lowe\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csulb.edu\/shark-lab\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Shark Lab<\/a> at CSU Long Beach. <\/p><p>Using this data, the authors combined shark sightings and oceanographic factors with mathematical models to see what variables best predicted how many sharks there were at the beach on any given day.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"835\" height=\"855\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Padaro-map.jpg\" alt=\"Padaro map\" class=\"wp-image-111028\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Map of Padaro Beach in Carpinteria, California<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What did the drones discover?<\/h2><p>The study found that shark density was most clearly affected by water temperature, season and time of day.<\/p><p>Sharks, especially the smaller ones (which lose heat faster), tend to avoid colder temperatures close to the seafloor and were slightly more attracted by warmer surface waters. <\/p><p>There were also significantly more sharks in summer \u2013 another observation that supports the temperature theory. There are exceptions to the rule, with some juveniles observed at Carpinteria in November and December. <\/p><p>Most of the sharks spotted in the study area were juveniles, suggesting that the beach is an important nursery habitat for baby white sharks. Again, there are exceptions, say the researchers, who spotted a number of larger sharks, including some that measured up to 15 feet.<\/p><p>The drones located more sharks near the surface in the late afternoon, another clue that they are trying to warm up in these balmier surface waters. &#8220;Compared to water at depth, [the surface] feels like a jacuzzi to these sharks after the sun warms [&#8230; it] all day,\u201d says Nathan, adding that eight times more sharks were recorded at the surf break, compared to farther out to sea.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1365\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/SharkEye-drone.jpg\" alt=\"SharkEye drone\" class=\"wp-image-111030\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">SharkEye drone getting ready for flight\/Neil Nathan<\/figcaption><\/figure><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do these observations mean?<\/h2><p>\u201cEveryone was curious about the scientists flying a drone on the beach,\u201d says Samantha Mladjov, lead SharkEye drone pilot and study co-author. <\/p><p>\u201cThe one thing everyone wanted to know was, \u2018What did you see: Are there a lot of sharks out there today? Should I go for a surf or a run?\u2019\u201d<\/p><p>Keen to keep the community informed, the team set up an automated text notification system that shared the results of the day&#8217;s survey in real time. <\/p><p>\u201cWe think data is empowering and helps us make safer, smarter decisions,\u201d says Nathan. <\/p><p>&#8220;Our goal in this program is to provide data that helps people fall more in love with the ocean.
