{"id":42165,"date":"2024-10-02T13:27:02","date_gmt":"2024-10-02T11:27:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/44890911-8b61-492d-a45c-8862df0ad5f5"},"modified":"2024-10-02T14:28:46","modified_gmt":"2024-10-02T12:28:46","slug":"it-gives-me-goosebumps-rare-amur-tigers-return-to-kazakhstan","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/it-gives-me-goosebumps-rare-amur-tigers-return-to-kazakhstan\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cIt gives me goosebumps.&#8221; Rare Amur tigers return to Kazakhstan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The first phase of a pioneering conservation project has seen two tigers moved from the Netherlands to Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve in Kazakhstan. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 02 October 2024 at 11:27 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>\u201cI have to pinch myself this is happening,\u201d says WWF\u2019s Tigers Alive leader Stuart Chapman. \u201cI look at that photo of the tiger being released into the enclosure, and it gives me goosebumps.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><p>Chapman is referring to a pioneering project that could see Amur tigers \u2013\u00a0the big cats found today only in Russia\u2019s Far East \u2013\u00a0reintroduced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ile-balkhash.kz\/en\/about-the-reserve\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ile-Balkhash Nature Reserve<\/a>, a 7000km<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0area of grasslands, forests and wetlands in the south-east corner of Kazakhstan.<\/p><p>If it goes ahead, it will be the first ever tiger reintroduction to a country from where they have been extirpated \u2013\u00a0tigers have only ever been translocated within national boundaries in the past.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">An Amur tiger at Stichting Leeuw, a wildlife shelter in the Netherlands. Credits Tessel in &#8216;t Veld<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-tigers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Expert tiger guide<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>Until 70 years ago, Kazakhstan had a population of Caspian tigers, the race that is now extinct but used to inhabit a large area around the Caspian Sea and large areas to the east. Scientists determined that the most closely related tigers were those now only found in Russia\u2019s Amur region \u2013\u00a0they had to be sufficiently adapted to the cold, with temperatures plummeting in\u00a0Ile-Balkhash\u00a0in the winter to -10\u02da to -20\u02daC.\u00a0<\/p><p>Amur tigers are larger and have thicker coats than those from elsewhere in Asia, allowing them to withstand such bone-chilling temperatures.<\/p><p>But there is still a way to go. The two tigers taken to the Ile-Balkhash reserve from the Netherlands will not be released \u2013\u00a0they are expected to breed, and it is their progeny that will become the first wild tigers to inhabit Kazakhstan since the mid-twentieth century.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1707\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Amur-tiger-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Amur tiger\" class=\"wp-image-111097\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Amur tiger in transit\/Credit: Tessel in &#8216;t Veld<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>More breeding stock from zoos will be acquired. Kazakhstan\u2019s Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources said that an agreement with Russia will allow for wild animals from Primorye and Khabarovsk Krai to be brought over (as early as next year), and it\u2019s also expected that tigers that had to be taken into captivity and cannot be returned to their original habitat will \u201cbe given the opportunity to start a new life in new environments.\u201d<\/p><p>Kazakhstan has been steadily repopulating the reserve with Bukhara deer and Asiatic wild asses over the past five years \u2013 tiger prey \u2013\u00a0and wild boar numbers have also been recovering. To increase the chances of cubs surviving post-release, live prey will be introduced into their enclosure so they can learn to hunt.<\/p><p>\u201cCats being cats are instinctively good at catching things, any [domestic] cat owner knows that,\u201d Chapman says. \u201cIn the case of tigers, however, the stakes are higher because there\u2019s a greater risk of injury and energy depletion.\u201d<\/p><p>WWF and the Kazakh Government hope that a total population of 50 tigers can be reached by 2035 in an area about one third the size of Wales. Chapman says there has been extensive consultation with local people who fully support the reintroduction plans.\u00a0<\/p><p>\u201cThere was a lot of scepticism when we first came up with this idea,\u201d Chapman adds. \u201cBut I believe this story resonates because it gives us hope and because it puts Kazakhstan on the map.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Tiger-reintroduction.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Amur-tiger-reintroduction.mov\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Watch: Amur tiger reintroduction.
