The autonomous underwater vehicle was exploring the slopes of a never-before-seen seamount in the waters around American Samoa in the Pacific Ocean when it stumbled upon the strange creature. <\/p>

Deep-sea scientists were over-the-moon to find their favourite anglerfish while exploring a never-before-seen seamount.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

During the\u00a0E Mamana Ou Gataifale II expedition<\/a>,\u00a0 Ocean Exploration Trust<\/a>\u00a0(OET) researchers were exploring the waters around American Samoa when they spotted the cute little critter. <\/p>

\u201cIt\u2019s our mascot on the Nautilus<\/em>,\u201d says one scientist. \u201cThere\u2019s a sticker and everything.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cThis is a\u00a0Chaunacops coloratus<\/em><\/a>. It is a type of fish in the anglerfish family,\u201d says a researcher in Nautilus Live\u2019s\u00a0video<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s got a little lure between the eyes \u2013 you see that little white line there \u2013 and it\u2019s just really, really cute.\u201d<\/p>

\u201cI have seen one swimming and it was, like, bopping its lure in and out \u2013 really fun,\u201d adds her colleague.<\/p>

Also known as a sea toad, the little fish waits calmly while the researchers gush about how much they love this species \u2013 exclaiming things like \u201cfrom this angle it looks like a little unicorn\u201d and \u201cthey\u2019re just like little Pok\u00e9mon\u201d \u2013 then it opens its mouth and slowly starts swimming away.\u00a0<\/p>

\u201cAnother fun fact about these fish is the opening of their gills are behind the pectoral fins so, if it wants to, it can use it as a little jet,\u201d explains a scientist \u2013 before the anglerfish gives them a demo of just that. \u201cIt\u2019s trying to impress us, or scare us away,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/p>
