Scientists just found what&#8217;s causing them"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">The otherworldly sounds are being made by an orchestra of little animals \u2013 all of which are new to science. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Daniel Graham\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Tuesday, 15 October 2024 at 11:26 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html><body><p><strong>Seven brand-new species of tree frogs have been discovered in the rainforests of Madagascar; and their <strong><strong>high-pitched, whistle-like<\/strong><\/strong> calls sound like something straight out of <em>Star Trek<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p><p>In a nod to the iconic sci-fi franchise, the research team who discovered the frogs have named the species after seven legendary\u00a0captains: Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway, Archer, Burnham and Pike.<\/p><p>Led by Professor Miguel Vences from the Technische Universit\u00e4t Braunschweig, the international team found that the frogs&#8217; unique calls help them communicate above the roar of the fast-flowing streams they inhabit. <\/p><p>Their findings were published in the journal <em><a href=\"https:\/\/vertebrate-zoology.arphahub.com\/article\/121110\/list\/2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vertebrate Zoology<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Four the seven new species of frog, all from the Boophis genus\/Miguel Vences et al.<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/animals-star-wars-characters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">10 animals named after <em>Star Wars <\/em>characters<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/skywalker-hoolock-gibbon-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Meet the Skywalker gibbon<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The study found that the whistle-like trills of the frogs cut through the forest, attracting mates while standing out in a crowded, sound-filled environment. It\u2019s almost as if their calls serve as a &#8216;star signal&#8217; in the rainforest, reminiscent of the sci-fi show\u2019s famous sound effects.<\/p><p>\u201cNot only do these frogs sound like sound-effects from Star Trek, but it seems also fitting that to find them, you often have to do quite a bit of trekking,&#8221; says Assistant Professor Mark D. Scherz from the Natural History Museum of Denmark, who helped lead the study. <\/p><p>&#8220;A few species are found in places accessible to tourists, but to find several of these species, we had to undertake major expeditions to remote forest fragments and mountain peaks. Scherz<\/figcaption><\/figure><ul><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/wirdest-frogss\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Weirdest frogs in the world<\/a><\/li><\/ul><p>The whistles, which may remind\u00a0<em>Star Trek<\/em>\u00a0fans of the &#8216;boatswain whistle&#8217; or even a &#8216;tricorder&#8217;, helped the researchers distinguish between different species, which can be confused based on looks alone. <\/p><p>\u201cIf the frogs just croaked like our familiar European frogs, they might not be audible over the sound of rushing water from the rivers they live near,&#8221; says Dr. J\u00f6rn K\u00f6hler, Senior Curator of\u00a0Vertebrate Zoology at the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt, Germany, who played a key role in analysing the calls of the frogs.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Madagascar-rainforest.mp4\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The frogs were found in Madagascar&#8217;s rainforest\/Getty<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>While Madagascar\u2019s rainforests are a treasure trove of biodiversity, home to roughly 9% of the world\u2019s frog species, these amphibians are particularly vulnerable to climate change. The research team hopes their findings will inspire stronger conservation efforts, as these frogs live in small, specialised habitats that make them sensitive to environmental shifts.<\/p><p>In the spirit of\u00a0<em>Star Trek<\/em>, the scientists say they are committed to &#8220;exploring more strange new worlds\u201d and they\u2019re certain there are even more species waiting to be discovered deep within Madagascar\u2019s rainforests.
