They would take adults from the sea, and sell them for their shells and meat, but not anymore. <\/strong><\/p><p>Now, a select group of the same individuals have turned their backs on poaching, and instead become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/sea-turtle-types\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sea turtle<\/a> guardians.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)\/Inaki Relanzon, WWF<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Five of the world\u2019s seven species of marine turtles live in the crystal-clear waters of Fiji. This includes both the green and hawksbill turtles, which nest on the islands\u2019 beaches. Although turtles have been protected in Fiji for over a decade, poaching is still rife. <\/p><p>Add to this the impact of climate change, and of being snared in nets or hit by boats, and hawksbill turtle populations have plummeted by\u00a080% in just three generations. Green turtles are struggling too, accounting for\u00a060% of sea turtles harvested illegally from Fiji between 2021 and 2022.\u00a0<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1875\" height=\"1250\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/A-WWF-Turtle-Monitor-volunteer-looks-out-over-a-turtle-nesting-beach-in-Fiji.jpg\" alt=\"A WWF Turtle Monitor volunteer looks out over a turtle nesting beach in Fiji\" class=\"wp-image-112950\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A WWF Turtle Monitor volunteer looks out over a turtle nesting beach in Fiji\/Tom Vierus, WWF<\/figcaption><\/figure><p>Fighting a losing battle,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwf.org.uk\/where-we-work\/places\/where-we-work-island-nation-fiji\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Wildlife Fund (WWF)-Pacific<\/a>\u00a0decided to enlist the help of those who knew the turtles best; residents of Fiji, including some former poachers. Dubbed the \u2018Dau ni Vonu,\u2019 a new community of turtle protectors has been established. Amongst their duties; protecting nests, counting eggs, safeguarding hatchlings and contributing to ongoing conservation efforts.<\/p><p>Fiji is an archipelago of more than 332 islands, many of which are home to nesting turtles. Last year we didn\u2019t have any nests with eggs on our main island. By January 2024, we have nine on this island alone. That in itself shows a big change in the community in just one year\u2019s time.\u201d<em>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p><p>When turtles eat the sponges that can outcompete the corals on the reefs where they swim, they help to maintain the health of these vibrant ecosystems. However, the WWF\u2019s 2024\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/news\/it-is-no-exaggeration-to-say-that-what-happens-in-the-next-five-years-will-determine-the-future-of-life-on-earth-new-wwf-report-warns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Living Planet Report<\/a>\u00a0warns that the world\u2019s reefs are approaching an irreversible tipping point, threatening the reefs and the many species that rely on them.
