They weigh between3.6-7.7 kg<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do red pandas look like<\/h2> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\">  <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Getty images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>Red pandas have thick russet-coloured fur with black underbelly and limbs. They have white markings on their face, and have a short snout and big ears. Their tail is long and bushy. They also have sharp, semi-retractable claws, flexible ankles and pseudothumbs.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What role do the patterns on their fur play?\u00a0<\/h2> <p>Red pandas\u2019\u00a0rusty red fur matches the moss and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/how-to\/identify-wildlife\/lichen\">lichens<\/a> that grow on the trees where they spend most of their lives, while the black fur on their\u00a0underneaths\u00a0makes them hard to spot from below. In both cases, this camouflage protects them from predators such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-snow-leopards\">snow leopards<\/a> and jackals.\u00a0<\/p> <p>The reddish-brown markings against the white fur on red pandas\u2019 faces is thought to have evolved to help keep the sun out of their eyes.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where do red pandas live?<\/h2> <p>Red pandas live in the high-altitude\u00a0(2,500-4,000m)\u00a0forests of the Eastern Himalayas\u00a0and other mountains, spread across Bhutan, China, India,\u00a0Myanmar\u00a0and Nepal. Mainly an arboreal species, they spend most of their lives in trees, eating,\u00a0sleeping\u00a0and sunbathing.\u00a0<\/p> <p>What were originally assumed to be two subspecies of red panda are now,\u00a0as a result ofrecent genetic research, thought to be two distinct species. The slightly smaller\u00a0<em>Ailurus fulgens\u00a0<\/em><em>fulgens<\/em>\u00a0is mostly found in Nepal, along with Bhutan,\u00a0India\u00a0and\u00a0Myanmar. The Chinese red panda,\u00a0<em>Ailurus fulgens\u00a0<\/em><em>refulgens<\/em>\u00a0is larger, with more\u00a0distinct rings on its fluffy tail.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do red pandas eat?<\/h2> <p>Belonging\u00a0to the order Carnivora,\u00a0red pandas are technically carnivores, but in\u00a0reality\u00a0they consume meat very rarely.\u00a0Instead,\u00a095 per cent of their diet is bamboo\u00a0\u2013 their name is thought to be derived from \u2018<em>ponya<\/em>\u2019, a Nepali word for bamboo\u00a0eater.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Red pandas access their favourite food using a very handy adaptation \u2013 an\u00a0extended wrist bone that\u00a0works\u00a0like a thumb,\u00a0helping\u00a0them grip\u00a0bamboo shoots.\u00a0While giant pandas\u00a0feed on most of the bamboo plant, red pandas go for the leaf tips and tender shoots\u00a0alone. \u00a0Because their digestive system is set up for eating meat, they only\u00a0actually\u00a0digest 24 per cent of the bamboo they eat.\u00a0This\u00a0means they\u00a0have to\u00a0eat massive amounts of it \u2013 up to 1.8kg every\u00a0day.\u00a0Crepuscular,\u00a0red pandas\u00a0forage at night and around dusk and dawn.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/plant-facts\/whats-the-fastest-growing-plant\">bamboo<\/a>, red pandas will sometimes tuck into\u00a0fruit,\u00a0acorns,\u00a0roots, lichens, birds and their\u00a0eggs,\u00a0insects\u00a0and small mammals.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How\u00a0do red pandas climb trees?\u00a0<\/h2> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/GettyImages-1B08157_0004.mp4\"\/> <\/figure> <p>Red pandas\u2019\u00a0pseudothumbs\u00a0are useful not just for holding onto bamboo shoots while eating, but for keeping a firm grip while climbing.\u00a0Widely separated toes and\u00a0semi-retractable claws are useful here too.\u00a0Flexible ankles mean that they can climb down trees headfirst, enabling a speedy escape from predators like jackals and snow leopards.\u00a0Their long, bushy tails\u00a0help with balance and thick fur on the\u00a0bottom of their\u00a0feet keeps them from slipping on wet or icy branches.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do red pandas deal with\u00a0the cold?\u00a0<\/h2> <p>Along with that bushy tail, which they can use to wrap around themselves\u00a0when curled in\u00a0a\u00a0ball, red pandas have two layers of fur: a soft, dense undercoat and a coarse upper coat.\u00a0This enables them to\u00a0cope with\u00a0night time\u00a0temperatures of as low as -7 degrees C, and also stay dry in snowy conditions. Red panda cubs, unlike giant panda cubs, are born with a full coat of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/difference-between-hair-and-fur\">fur<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p> <p>If temperatures drop\u00a0really low, red pandas can become dormant, going into a state of decreased \u00a0physiological activity\u00a0known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/torpor-vs-hibernation-sleep\">torpor<\/a>. By slowing their metabolic rate and lowering their body temperature, they can conserve energy, a useful skill given how few nutrients they get from their diet. Red pandas rouse themselves from this deep sleep every few hours to feed.\u00a0<\/p> <p>In warm weather, red pandas will stretch out on a branch and pant to lower their body temperature, just like a dog does.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"\/> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are red pandas sociable?\u00a0<\/h2> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/GettyImages-1156657254.mp4\"\/> <\/figure> <p>Red pandas\u00a0are solitary creatures, only interacting with\u00a0each other\u00a0in breeding season, though in zoos, breeding pairs will usually live together year-round.\u00a0<\/p> <p>When red pandas do come across others of their species, they will communicate by squealing or making a so-called \u2018huff-quack\u2019, a cross between a duck\u2019s quack and a pig\u2019s snort. They will also arch their tails, bob their heads and, if threatened, stand on their hind\u00a0legs\u00a0or release a stinky liquid from glands at the base of their tail.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do red pandas reproduce?<\/h2> <p>Breeding season is\u00a0January through March\u00a0for red pandas in the northern hemisphere, andJune through August\u00a0for those in the southern hemisphere.\u00a0Though pandas spend most of their lives in the trees, they come to the forest floor to mate,\u00a0the male marking his territory with liquid from the glands at the base of his tail when searching for a mate. He\u2019ll also leave piles of scat.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Female red pandas are only fertile for a couple of days a\u00a0year, but\u00a0have developed a clever adaptation \u2013 delayed implantation \u2013 to ensure that cubs are born in the spring when the most tender bamboo shoots are available.\u00a0Gestation\u00a0therefore\u00a0ranges from 93 to 156 days. Thefemale builds\u00a0a nest in a tree hole or stump, or amongst tree roots or a thicket of bamboo, and lines\u00a0it with moss, leaves and other plant material.\u00a0<\/p> <p>There are one to four cubs per litter, with two most common. Cubs\u00a0will\u00a0be weaned by around five months but\u00a0stay with their mother for\u00a0up to a\u00a0year, or the onset of the next breeding season.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Red pandas reach sexual maturity at 18 months old, with females bearing cubs until the age of 12.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long do red pandas live<\/h2> <p>Red pandas can live up to\u00a023 years, though typically up to 10 in the wild<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What threats\u00a0do they face?<\/h2> <p>With fewer than 10,000 individuals left in the wild, red pandas are listed as\u00a0Endangered\u00a0on the IUCN Red List.
