What they found was remarkable"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">It&#8217;s the first time the tropical mountains in south-west Cambodia have been studied in this way \u2013 here&#8217;s what the team discovered&#8230; <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Graeme Green\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 30 October 2024 at 11:00 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html> <head\/> <body> <p><strong>The\u00a0first-ever camera trap study of the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape has recorded 108 species, 23 of which are listed Vulnerable or higher risk on the IUCN Red List. <\/strong><\/p> <p>A total of 147 camera traps were deployed between February and December 2023, placed on potential wildlife corridors and around water sources, which have captured remarkable footage of wild animals in action in the tropical rainforest, including a critically endangered baby Sunda pangolin hitching a ride on its mother\u2019s back.\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Sun bear (Helarctos malayanus)\/Conservation International <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>The Cardamom Mountains in the west of Cambodia has long been known to be a vital sanctuary for rare and endangered wildlife.<\/p> <p>Conservation efforts began several decades ago to turn around deforestation and wildlife-poaching, including former poachers being employed as rangers and ecotourism guides.<\/p> <p>The region faces threats from illegal logging, forest-clearing for agriculture, poaching, and the unsustainable overuse of natural resources, such as wood-collection for charcoal, overfishing, and sand-dredging.\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Pangolin-1-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Pangolin.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Sunda pangolin (Manis javanica), mother and pangopup, listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List\/Conservation International <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/facts-about-pangolins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What are pangolins?<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>The extensive new study provides a \u2018baseline\u2019, documenting the wildlife that currently exists in the forest.<\/p> <p>\u201cThe camera trap study provides the scientific evidence needed to create a clear call to action to governments, policy-makers and funders for the continued investment in the protection of this region,\u201d says Sony Oum, Cambodia country lead for wildlife charity\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/\">Conservation International<\/a>.<\/p> <p>\u201cIt provides objective \u2018proof\u2019 that this region supports a wide range of species, and in particular, species that are endangered. The study also informs land-management plans. It establishes a baseline understanding of the range of species supported by the forest and allows for the ongoing monitoring of populations. It also gives us a general idea where in this large landscape key species live.\u201d\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-1-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-1.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Asian elephant (Elephas maximus), listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List\/Conservation International <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>With over 95% of its forests intact, the Central Cardamom Mountains Landscape remains one of the country&#8217;s least deforested areas.<\/p> <p>Recognised as one of the Global 200 ecoregions, the landscape is home to nearly 4,000\u00a0Chourng\u00a0and\u00a0Por\u00a0Indigenous peoples, as well as supporting more than 500 species.<\/p> <p>It also stores a significant volume of carbon, vital in the battle against climate change, and provides a critical watershed for over 30,000 people downstream, sustaining agriculture and fisheries, including Tonle Sap Lake.\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-2-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-2.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Pileated gibbon (Hylobates pileatus), listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List\/Conservation International <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>The report, released by the Cambodian Ministry of Environment (MoE), the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Conservation International and partners, documents 65 bird species, 38 mammal species, and five reptile species, including the endangered dhole,\u00a0one of the last remaining predators in Cambodia, and its abundant prey base including wild pig,\u00a0and northern red muntjac.\u00a0<\/p> <p>The study detected other rare and elusive species, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/asian-elephants-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Asian elephants<\/a>, Sunda pangolins,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/bornean-clouded-leopard-family-filmed-in-wild-for-first-time-ever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">clouded leopards<\/a>,\u00a0marbled cats,\u00a0Asiatic golden cats,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/sun-bear-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sun bears<\/a>, Asiatic black bear,\u00a0gaur and green peafowl.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-3-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/10\/Central-Cardamom-Mountains-Landscape-wildlife-3.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii)\/Conservation International <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>\u201cThe findings reveal that the Central Cardamoms Mountain Landscape is a still a stronghold for globally threatened species,\u201d says\u00a0Oum.\u00a0<\/p> <p>\u201cIt\u2019s really interesting that this survey was able to detect large Indian civet but there was zero detection of large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/mammals\/civet-coffee-kopi-luwak-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spotted civet<\/a> \u2013 this warrants further studies to investigate what\u2019s happening to large spotted civets in the landscape.
