But it didn\u2019t go to plan&#8230; <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Melissa Hobson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Monday, 11 November 2024 at 15:55 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html> <head\/> <body> <p><strong>A manatee called Tico travelled nearly 2,500 miles over 62 days when he was released back to his native environment after eight years of rehabilitation. <\/strong><\/p> <p>Brazil-based NGO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aquasis.org\/?lang=en\">Associa\u00e7\u00e3o de Pesquisa e Preserva\u00e7\u00e3o de Ecossistemas Aqu\u00e1ticos<\/a>\u00a0(Aquasis) had nursed him back to health and tagged him so they could track his journey in the wild.\u00a0<\/p> <p>They were surprised to see him travel so far so quickly \u2013 from Icapu\u00ed, Cear\u00e1, Brazil to La Blanquilla Island, Venezuela \u2013 and realised that Tico must have got into trouble.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">  <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Tico traveled nearly 2,500 miles over 62 days from Icapu\u00ed, Cear\u00e1, Brazil to La Blanquilla Island in Venezuela. While some manatees are known to travel hundreds, and even thousands of miles, the speed and distance of Tico\u2019s journey was anything but normal\/Charin Park, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>lury Simoes-Sousa, a physical oceanographer at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) was called in to help.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Based on his knowledge of ocean currents, Simoes-Sousa guessed that the West Indian manatee (<em>Trichechus manatus<\/em>) had been caught in the North Brazil Current (NBC) and dragged out to sea.\u00a0<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/manatee-guide-where-they-live-what-they-eat-and-why-theyre-known-as-sea-cows\">A quick guide to manatees<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>\u201cStudying his path, we can assume that Tico had a very tiresome journey,\u201d Simoes-Sousa says. \u201cIt\u2019s likely he encountered multiple violent storms.\u201d<\/p> <p>The team used their network to try to find Tico so they could rescue him a second time. Specialists prepared him to return to nearby shallow waters, and in July 2022, he was tagged and released\/Video by Mikael Holanda, Aquasis <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>\u201cWe were so happy, some of us cried,\u201d says Vitor Luz Carvalho, a senior veterinarian at Aquasis.<\/p> <p>The manatee was in a bad way. He was dehydrated, had lost weight and had a plastic bag blocking his digestive tract.<\/p> <p>The rescuers transported him to a local aquarium for rehabilitation and experts have now published\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/journal-of-the-marine-biological-association-of-the-united-kingdom\/article\/longest-documented-travel-by-a-west-indian-manatee\/9F8A4AEE976143B0AC90E9AF68B31A86\">study<\/a>\u00a0on his astonishing journey.\u00a0<\/p> <p>&#8220;Without the additional perspective of lury, I am not sure we would have gotten permission to bring Tico home,\u201d says Aquasis monitoring coordinator Camila Carvalho de Carvalho. \u201cThe data provided by an oceanographer was critical in being able to tell the full story of Tico\u2019s incredible, and long, journey.\u201d<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2560\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/11\/Tico-manatee-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"Tico manatee\" class=\"wp-image-114846\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> When Tico was a newborn in October 2014, he was found stranded in north-eastern Brazil and taken in by Aquasis.
