The black-eyed squid (<em>Gonatus onyx<\/em>) is one of the few species that brood their eggs.<\/p> <p>\u201cA female Gonatus onyx will carry her large egg mass for months, keeping it suspended from hooks on the squid\u2019s arms,\u201d says\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/schmidt-ocean-institute_chileanmargin2024-activity-7256664001449807873-NKTu\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member\">Schmidt Ocean Institute on\u00a0LinkedIn<\/a>. \u201cIt is a dangerous time\u2026 brooding squid cannot move very quickly, and may be easy prey for deep-diving marine mammals.\u201d\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/11\/Gonatus-onyx-squid.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/11\/Gonatus-onyx.mp4\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Watch the black-eye squid swimming through the deep\/Schmidt Ocean Institute <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>There are up to 3,000 eggs in this cluster. The incubation time could be around six to nine months and the expectant mother will keep pumping water over her eggs the entire time to make sure they have a good oxygen supply.
