{"id":43831,"date":"2024-11-13T12:43:12","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:43:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/a43a9a4e-e819-495f-b26a-d122725b2001"},"modified":"2024-11-13T14:27:25","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T13:27:25","slug":"birdwatching-world-in-shock-as-strange-songster-from-the-americas-turns-up-in-english-village","status":"publish","type":"rss_feed","link":"https:\/\/c01.purpledshub.com\/bbcwildlife\/rss_feed\/birdwatching-world-in-shock-as-strange-songster-from-the-americas-turns-up-in-english-village\/","title":{"rendered":"Birdwatching world in shock as strange songster from the Americas turns up in English village"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"rssexcerpt\">Hundreds of birders have flocked to a sleepy village in the county of Yorkshire to see to the colourful Scarlet Tanager. <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 13 November 2024 at 11:43 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html> <head\/> <body> <p><strong>The UK\u2019s birdwatching world was a flutter this week with news that a Scarlet Tanager\u00a0(<em>Piranga olivacea<\/em>)\u00a0had appeared on a washing\u00a0line in Yorkshire. <\/strong><\/p> <p>Normally it\u2019s a bird that migrates across the Gulf of Mexico from its summer breeding grounds in northern and eastern\u00a0North America\u00a0to overwinter in\u00a0the montane forests of\u00a0Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador in South America.\u00a0<\/p> <p>To turn up in the northeast of England, this young, first-winter male\u00a0had been\u00a0seriously\u00a0blown\u00a0off course by the\u00a0strong\u00a0prevailing winds\u00a0following recent storms in the Atlantic.\u00a0<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/how-do-birds-migrate\">How do birds know when and where to migrate?<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/wildlife\/birds\/do-birds-that-get-lost-migrating-find-their-way-home\">Do birds that get lost migrating ever find their way home?<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Such events are not unknown, but they are rare \u2013 the last Scarlet Tanager to be seen anywhere in the UK was 10 years ago and there have only ever been eight recorded sightings in the country.\u00a0<\/p> <p>Previous\u00a0arrivals have been on the eastern side of the country, on the island of Barra in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/outer-hebrides-guide-best-places-to-see-wildlife\">Outer Hebrides<\/a>, in Ireland\u00a0and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/uk-travel\/holiday-ideas\/essential-guide-to-visiting-cornwall\">Cornwall<\/a>. To have made it all the\u00a0way to the village of Shelf\u00a0on the edge of Bradford\u00a0in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.countryfile.com\/go-outdoors\/days-out\/guide-to-yorkshire-where-to-stay-eat-visit-walks\">Yorkshire<\/a> this little bird, weighing only\u00a0around 30\u00a0grams, must have crossed the country unseen at night.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do Scarlet Tanagers look like?<\/strong><\/h2> <p>Female birds and\u00a0juveniles\u00a0such as this one\u00a0are\u00a0normally hard to spot in their\u00a0home range,\u00a0as their plumage is yellowish-green with dark brown-green wings.<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\">  <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> The beautiful adult male. Getty images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>Mature males are the showy birds with blood-red bodies and jet-black wings (see above).\u00a0In this bird\u2019s case, the less dense foliage of a cul-de-sac garden provided little cover to hide\u00a0it\u00a0from the gaze of dozens of eagle-eyed birders who had travelled long distances to add it to their UK lists.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/birds\/why-are-red-birds-red\">Why are red birds red?<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Scarlet Tanagers are somewhat mis-named. The species was originally placed in the\u00a0tanager family of American\u00a0songbirds\u00a0but it was recently reclassified to be a member of the\u00a0cardinal group. In their winter habitat they travel in mixed\u00a0foraging\u00a0flocks\u00a0with flycatchers, antbirds and other species of tanagers.\u00a0<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do Scarlet Tanagers eat and how do they hunt?<\/strong><\/h2> <p>To catch their prey of moths, leafhoppers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/bee-vs-wasp-whats-the-difference\">bees and wasps<\/a>, locusts and other flying insects, they\u00a0employ a hunting style known as sallying\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0leaving a high perch in a tree to snatch\u00a0the bugs\u00a0out of the air and return to the perch to consume them.\u00a0With hornets and the like, the birds rub the\u00a0abdomens\u00a0backwards and forwards along a branch to remove the stings before they eat them.<\/p> <p>Although there are likely to be slim pickings for the Yorkshire bird,\u00a0tanagers\u00a0are also known to eat fruit, earthworms and snails when necessary,\u00a0and our milder winter may help it survive to thrill even more ardent birders.<\/p> <p>Top image: Females and young males have similar plumage.
