Evolutionary biologist and BBC Wildlife columnist JV Chamary explains the process of metamorphosis <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Friday, 15 November 2024 at 15:40 PM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html> <head\/> <body> <p><strong>We first encounter metamorphosis through children\u2019s books such as The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in which (spoiler alert!) the insatiable insect ends up turning into a beautiful butterfly.<\/strong><\/p> <p>This process \u2013 a spectacular transformation in an animal\u2019s form or \u2018morphology\u2019 \u2013 produces dramatic differences between larvae and adults.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What animals go through metamorphosis?<\/h2> <p>Metamorphosis is characteristic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/what-are-insects\">insects<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/amphibians-of-the-british-isles\">amphibians<\/a>, but it\u2019s also found in specific groups. Flatfish are a clear case among vertebrates: a fish starts with two sides to its body \u2013 bilateral symmetry \u2013 but the right eye migrates to the left side and its dorsal fin becomes shorter as it transitions from a free-swimming larva to a \u2018benthic\u2019 or bottom-dwelling adult on the seafloor or river bed.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"navto:\/\/bd96e4c6-f4c0-406f-a697-e653507e0028\">Amphibian vs reptile: what&#8217;s the difference?<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/weirdest-animal-eyes\">The weirdest eyes in the animal kingdom: From creepy to cute, here are the eyes that take ordinary to extraordinary<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Similar phenomena occur in invertebrates. For example, adult <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/what-are-echinoderms\">echinoderms<\/a> have a benthic lifestyle and radial symmetry \u2013 as seen in five-armed starfish \u2013 but their larvae are bilaterally symmetrical, free-swimming plankton.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do insects go through metamorphosis?<\/h2> <div class=\"wp-block-image\"> <figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">  <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Getty Images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <\/div> <p>Insects have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/what-is-an-exoskeleton\">exoskeleton<\/a>, which constrains size and shape, and must shed their rigid, outermost layer (moulting) and form a new one to grow. Primitive groups such as silverfish are \u2018ametabolous\u2019, meaning they don\u2019t transform and hatchlings are small versions of the wingless adults. A guide to nature\u2019s greatest transformation<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/grasshoppers-vs-crickets\">Grasshoppers vs crickets: what&#8217;s the difference between these two jumping insects?<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"\/> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"\/> <p>Most (nearly 85 per cent) of insect species, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/largest-beetle\">beetles<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/how-do-flies-mate\">flies<\/a>, are \u2018holometabolous\u2019, which means complete metamorphosis: a newly hatched larva is obviously distinct from the adult form and there\u2019s an inactive transition stage, the pupa. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/butterfly-lifecycle\">Butterflies<\/a>, for instance, emerge from a chrysalis after living as caterpillars with elongated bodies, \u2018prolegs\u2019 on the abdomen and large mandibles for chewing.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about amphibians?<\/h2> <div class=\"wp-block-image\"> <figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2121\" height=\"1414\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/09\/Why-do-we-say-frog-in-your-throat.jpg\" alt=\"why do we say frog in your throat\" class=\"wp-image-110352\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Getty Images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <\/div> <p>Like all amphibians, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/facts-about-common-frogs\">frogs<\/a> are semiaquatic creatures that use their moist skin as a respiratory organ. But while tadpoles have gills too, adults develop lungs. Over a few weeks, the larva\u2019s body also absorbs structures such as the tail before growing muscular back legs for jumping and a huge mouth to engulf prey. Many of these amphibians are lizard-shaped as adults, but as larvae they have a flattened tail (a rudder and keel in water) that\u2019s lost once juveniles shift to life on land. One unusual species is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/amphibians\/facts-about-axolotls\">axolotl<\/a>, which is \u2018paedomorphic\u2019 \u2013 it becomes sexually mature but retains larval traits such as feathery <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/fish-gills\">gills<\/a>.<\/p> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does metamorphosis work?<\/h2> <p>Remodelling of a body results from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/cells-guide-what-they-are-the-differences-between-prokaryotes-and-eukaryotes-and-how-they-replicate\">cells<\/a> dying, dividing or differentiating to become other types. Cells do that in response to the rise or fall in levels of certain hormones. In insects, where metamorphosis requires moulting or \u2018ecdysis\u2019, ecdysteroids are crucial to the process, while vertebrate transitions are often controlled by thyroid hormones.<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"navto:\/\/7ac8de23-a62f-4709-8edc-e4d08446d1c7\">Masters of regeneration: these death-defying animals can regrow body parts better than Deadpool<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Note that while the most apparent changes are external, metamorphosis alters an animal\u2019s internal physiology, too. Credit: Getty Images <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <p>Metamorphosis allows animals at different stages to occupy separate ecological niches, which reduces competition for resources as larvae and adults often have distinct diets. Tadpoles are herbivores while frogs are carnivores, for example.<\/p> <p>With millions of species, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/insects-invertebrates\/what-are-insects\">insects<\/a> are more diverse than all the other groups of visible organisms combined.
