Researchers at the\u00a0Schmidt Ocean Institute<\/a>\u00a0were stunned by an iridescent polychaete (bristle worm) captured on film while on expedition in Chile.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>

\u201cTo describe this polychaete, one simply must use jazz hands \u2014 it is the only way to capture this deep-sea worm\u2019s dazzle,\u201d Schmidt Ocean Institute says on\u00a0 Instagram.<\/a>\u00a0\u201cSome worms are bioluminescent<\/a>, but this sassy sparkler has protein structures in the bristles that make them iridescent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>

The footage of this spectacular animal was captured by an underwater robot while exploring a nearshore deep-sea feature called the Chile Margin.<\/p>
Here, \u201ca submerged continental shelf extends from the country\u2019s west coast and drops steeply and suddenly into the Pacific Ocean,\u201d says Schmidt Ocean Institute.<\/p>
This margin runs the entire length of South America and its conditions make it \u201ca natural laboratory for investigating chemosynthetic and deep-sea environments that host animals like this [queue jazz hands] shimmering deep-sea worm.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>
