Here&#8217;s why their work is so important&#8230; <\/p><p class=\"rssauthor\">By Melissa Hobson\n      <\/p><p class=\"rssbyline\">Published: Wednesday, 04 December 2024 at 08:15 AM<\/p><hr class=\"no-tts wp-block-separator\"\/><?xml version=\"1.0\" encoding=\"UTF-8\" standalone=\"yes\"?>\n<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC \"-\/\/W3C\/\/DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional\/\/EN\" \"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/REC-html40\/loose.dtd\">\n<html> <head\/> <body> <p><strong>With only 73 Southern Resident killer whales left in the Salish Sea \u2013 a series of waterways between British Columbia in Canada and the U.S. state of Washington \u2013 researchers are urgently trying to learn more about the health of the species so they can diagnose and treat any illnesses as early as possible. <\/strong><\/p> <p>They\u2019re even using drones to collect the orcas\u2019 breath without disturbing the animals.\u00a0<\/p> <figure class=\"wp-block-video\"> <video controls=\"\" poster=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/12\/Orca-breath.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/c02.purpledshub.com\/uploads\/sites\/62\/2024\/12\/Whale_KillerProject_MMR.mov\"\/> <figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Watch the orca breath project in action | flying drones over whales requires a research permit \u2013 this research was collected under NMFS Permit #27052)\/San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance <\/figcaption> <\/figure> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/facts-about-orcas\">Learn more about orcas<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> <p>Flying a drone over a moving killer whale and lining it up in exactly the right spot, just as it exhales, is a difficult task.\u00a0<\/p> <p>\u201cEven for our professional drone pilots, collecting wild killer whale breath is easily their most technically challenging conservation mission,\u201d says \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.sandiegozoo.org\/staff\/hendrik-nollens-dvm-msc-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dr. Hendrik Nollens<\/a>, Vice President of Wildlife Health at San Diego Zoo Global Alliance.<\/p> <p>\u201cPlacing the drone and its payload inside the breath plume, without interfering with the whale, is not too different from resolving a doctorate level geometry equation with each approach.\u201d<\/p> <p>Once samples have been collected, they are processed and analysed in the lab.\u00a0<\/p> <p>&#8220;This is certainly not veterinary medicine in its traditional sense,\u201d he says.<\/p> <p>The idea for this hands-off conservation programme was inspired by a Southern Resident whale called Scarlet, who died in 2018. Researchers knew she was sick but couldn\u2019t find a cause and were unable to save her \u2013 their attempt to treat her with antibiotics coming too late.
