A new BBC TV film focusing on its hunting behaviour hopes to change perceptions of the fearsome ocean creature <\/p>

In a remote corner of Antarctica, a group of around 100 orcas<\/a> were filmed demonstrating unprecedented hunting behaviour.<\/strong><\/p>

Swimming together, they created powerful waves that washed their seal prey off floating ice<\/a>. The resulting footage gripped people around the world after it featured in BBC One\u2019s Frozen Planet II<\/em>.<\/p>

<\/div> <\/figure> <h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Expedition Killer Whale<\/em> about?<\/h2> Expedition Killer Whale<\/em> joins a group of scientists and filmmakers as they return to the icy Antarctic waters to further understanding of the unique hunting behaviour of killer whales.<\/p> ‘Killer whales generally incite feelings of fear \u2013 they\u2019re seen as fierce, terrifying, ruthless hunters,’ says Orla Doherty, the executive producer. ‘But in Expedition Killer Whale<\/em>, we set out on a mission to reveal an entirely different side to these killer whales. This film really dives deep into the matriarchs \u2013 the females that lead their families.’<\/p> <ul class=\"wp-block-list\"> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/are-killer-whales-dangerous-to-humans\">Are killer whales dangerous to humans?<\/a><\/li> <li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/orcas-hunting-whale-sharks-gulf-of-california\">Orcas are now hunting whale sharks \u2013 and they’re doing it in an astonishing way<\/a><\/li> <\/ul> Doherty continues: ‘I have dedicated myself to making films and telling the world about the wonders of the ocean and the top animal, the most impressive, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverwildlife.com\/animal-facts\/marine-animals\/whales-have-their-own-alphabet\">most intelligent<\/a> and the most fascinating animal in the ocean is the killer whale. Witness one matriarch leading a \u2018teaching session\u2019 in how to safely hunt crabeater seals, and listen to the first audio recordings of sounds that killer whales make when hunting and looking for prey.
