Italian shoe manufacturer Northwave is a brand that aims to pioneer footwear technology and it builds on that reputation with the Extreme XC 2.

This shoe incorporates refined features that, Northwave says, will “deliver unbeatable lightness and responsiveness whether you’re in a technical rock garden or struggling up a steep climb”.

Here are four key features of the Northwave Extreme XC 2, the brand’s new XC racing and gravel riding shoe.

Providing support

The Extreme XC 2 uses Northwave’s ARS (Anatomic Reticular Support) technology.

In a bid to maximise power transfer, Northwave has developed ARS (Anatomic Reticular Support) technology – an exoskeleton that adapts to different types of feet.

It surrounds the foot to provide a fit that transfers power efficiently to the pedal in an even, controlled way, making every watt count.

Quick fastening

The SLW3 dials are designed to provide a finely tuned fit.

Speed is key when you’re taking on trails. Northwave’s new dual SLW3 system, developed by X-Dial, is a compact mechanism that’s light and intuitive, and enables lightning-fast, accurate closure.

Its dual-fastening system enables you to differentiate pressure across the toe area and top of the instep, allowing you to tweak and adjust for ultimate comfort.

Sole matters

The shoe combines a carbon fibre sole with gripped rubber inserts.

In 2014, Northwave pioneered using Michelin rubber in a sole tread and it continues this design feature with the Extreme XC 2.

The Hyperlight XC sole has been crafted in 100 per cent unidirectional carbon fibre, combining low weight and extreme rigidity with rubber inserts that are 28 per cent sturdier than TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane).

Dual Layers Compound Technology is sculpted to provide both flexibility and improved traction.

Last the distance

The Extreme XC 2 shoes are designed to provide comfort and ventilation for hot-weather riding.

We all prefer to avoid our feet overheating on the trails and the Extreme XC 2 features both mesh inserts and a perforated upper to provide ventilation, while abrasion-resistant reinforcements in TPU aid comfort.

Both are essential factors that count towards endurance when you’re out on rugged terrain.
